Deuteronomy 7:15
And the Lord will take away from thee all sickness, and will put none of the evil diseases of Egypt, which thou knowest, upon thee; but will lay them upon all them that hate thee.
Deuteronomy 7:15 (KJV)
Context
Deuteronomy records Moses’ final words to Israel before they entered the Promised Land. This promise belongs to a larger covenant passage, Deuteronomy 7:12-16, where God pledges to love, bless, and protect His obedient people. The covenant context is vital: God’s faithfulness to His people is contrasted with judgment on their enemies.
Meaning
God promises to take away all sickness from the Israelites and to keep from them the evil diseases of Egypt, which they knew. These diseases likely included the plagues and severe afflictions they witnessed during their slavery. The phrase “evil diseases of Egypt” served as a tangible reminder of God’s power and past deliverance. This promise was conditional, tied to Israel’s obedience to God’s commandments. It was a covenantal blessing, not a universal guarantee of perfect health for all believers in every circumstance. God’s sovereignty over physical health and disease is clear; He can both protect and afflict according to His will.
Biblical connections
The latter part of the verse says the diseases would be laid upon those who hate the Israelites. This shows God’s justice: those who oppose His people and rebel against Him will face consequences. The ultimate fulfillment of this promise points to Christ, who bore our sicknesses and carried our pains, as Isaiah 53:4 describes. Through His atonement, believers find ultimate healing and deliverance from the curse of sin and death. This does not deny present suffering but points to future complete redemption.
Application
While this promise was given to ancient Israel, spiritual principles apply today. Believers can trust in God’s faithfulness and His desire to bless them. Even when we experience sickness and challenges in this fallen world, we can find comfort in knowing that God is with us and is our ultimate source of healing and deliverance. The promise of protection was conditional upon obedience, and throughout the Bible, God’s blessings are often contingent upon our response to His commands. Jesus also emphasized the importance of obedience and faith in our relationship with God.
Trust God’s protective care, knowing He is sovereign over health and disease.
Obey His commands, recognizing that obedience opens the door to His blessings.
Remember that physical healing is part of God’s covenant blessings, but our ultimate hope is in eternal salvation.
Reflection
This verse reminds us of God’s justice and the importance of obedience and faith. It encourages believers to remain faithful and not envy the wicked, for those who hate God and His people will face judgment. Our hope rests not in perfect health in this life, but in the complete redemption that Christ secured for us. This promise also warns that those who hate God will face judgment, urging us to stay faithful and trust in His ultimate plan.
