Deuteronomy 7:21

Listen to this article

“Thou shalt not be affrighted at them: for the Lord thy God is among you, a mighty God and terrible.”

Context:Deuteronomy is the fifth book of the Bible and contains Moses’ final speeches to the Israelites before they enter the land of Canaan. In these speeches, Moses reminds the people of God’s covenant, His commandments, and the blessings and consequences associated with obedience or disobedience.

God’s Presence:In Deuteronomy 7:21, Moses encourages the Israelites not to be afraid of the inhabitants of the land they are about to conquer. The reason for their fearlessness is that the Lord their God is with them. This verse reminds the Israelites that God’s presence would be their source of strength, protection, and victory. The assurance of God’s presence should alleviate their fears and give them confidence.

A Mighty and Terrible God:The verse describes the nature of God as “a mighty God and terrible.” This phrase emphasizes God’s power and might. It reminds the Israelites that the God who is with them is not only powerful but also fearsome to their enemies. The Israelites can trust in the strength and supremacy of their God.

Application:

  • Trust in God’s Presence:Just as the Israelites were encouraged to trust in God’s presence, we, as believers today, can find strength and courage in the assurance that God is with us. We should not be afraid when faced with challenges or opposition because our God is mighty and always present.
  • Overcoming Fear:Fear is a common human emotion, but we can overcome it by focusing on God’s power and faithfulness. When we remember that God is with us and that He is sovereign over all things, our fears diminish, and we can move forward in faith.
  • God’s Protection:The verse also reminds us that God’s presence brings protection. As we face difficulties or spiritual battles, we can trust in His strength to shield us from harm and give us victory.
  • Reverence for God:The term “terrible” used in the verse can also be understood as “awesome” or “awe-inspiring.” It reminds us to approach God with reverence and respect. Recognizing His might and power should deepen our awe and reverence for Him.

In conclusion, Deuteronomy 7:21 encourages the Israelites and believers today not to fear because God is with them. It emphasizes God’s presence, His might, and His protection. As we face challenges and uncertainties, let us remember that our God is mighty, and He goes before us, making us strong and courageous.
