Deuteronomy 7:22

Posted on 1 July 2024
Listen to this article

“And the LORD thy God will put out those nations before thee by little and little: thou mayest not consume them at once, lest the beasts of the field increase upon thee.”

Context:Deuteronomy is the fifth book of the Bible and contains the final teachings of Moses to the Israelites before they entered the Promised Land. This verse comes in the context of God’s instructions to the Israelites regarding the conquest of the nations living in Canaan.

Gradual Conquest:In this verse, God assures the Israelites that He will help them overcome the nations occupying the land. However, He advises them not to drive out all these nations at once. Instead, He will do it “by little and little.” This gradual process was to prevent an immediate void in the land, which might have led to an overpopulation of wild beasts.

Spiritual Lesson – Patience and Trust:The verse holds a spiritual lesson for the Israelites and for us today. It teaches us the importance of patience and trust in God’s timing and plan. Just as the Israelites had to wait for the complete possession of the Promised Land, we, too, may experience gradual progress in different areas of our lives. This verse encourages us to trust in God’s guidance and timing, even when it seems like progress is slow or obstacles arise.

God’s Sovereignty:The verse also highlights God’s sovereignty and His involvement in the affairs of His people. The Israelites were not left to conquer the land on their own; it was God who would put out the nations before them. It is a reminder that our victories and achievements come from God’s hand, and we should rely on His strength and guidance.

Protection and Balance:Another aspect of this verse is the concern for the well-being of the Israelites. By not consuming the nations all at once, God was protecting His people from the potential threat of an overpopulation of wild animals. This reveals God’s wisdom and His care for His chosen people, ensuring a balanced and sustainable environment.

Application:As we reflect on this verse, we can apply its principles to our lives. We are called to trust in God’s timing and plan, knowing that He is in control. We should seek His guidance and direction, understanding that our victories come from Him. Furthermore, we can be reassured that God cares for our well-being and desires balance and order in our lives.

In summary, Deuteronomy 7:22 reminds us of the importance of patience, trust in God’s timing, and His sovereignty in our lives. It teaches us to rely on God’s guidance and protection and to be mindful of the balanced order He desires for us.
