Deuteronomy 10:5

Listen to this article

“And I turned myself and came down from the mount, and put the tables in the ark which I had made; and there they be, as the LORD commanded me.”

This verse is part of the account of Moses receiving the Ten Commandments from God on Mount Sinai. Let’s break down the verse and explore its context and significance.

The Context:Deuteronomy is the fifth book of the Bible, and it primarily consists of speeches delivered by Moses to the Israelites before they entered the Promised Land. In this particular passage, Moses is recounting the events that took place after the Israelites’ worship of the golden calf (Exodus 32). Moses had gone up the mountain to receive the commandments from God and spent forty days and nights in God’s presence.

The Descent from the Mountain:The verse begins with Moses saying, “And I turned myself and came down from the mount.” This indicates that after his extended stay with God, Moses returned from Mount Sinai to the camp of the Israelites. It symbolises the transition from God’s presence to the people.

The Ark and the Tablets:Moses continues by stating, “and put the tables in the ark which I had made.” Here, Moses is referring to the two stone tablets on which the Ten Commandments were inscribed. The Ark of the Covenant, a sacred container, was constructed according to God’s instructions (Exodus 25:10-22). The tablets were placed inside the Ark as a means of preserving and protecting the divine commandments.

Obedience to God’s Command:The verse concludes with Moses acknowledging that the tablets were placed in the Ark as the Lord had commanded him. This demonstrates Moses’ obedience to God’s instructions, reinforcing the importance of following God’s commands. The verse highlights Moses’ role as a faithful intermediary between God and the Israelites. It signifies the sacredness and significance of the Ten Commandments, which serve as the foundation of God’s covenant with His people.

Overall, Deuteronomy 10:5 reminds us of the reverence and obedience required in our relationship with God. Just as Moses carefully preserved the tablets and followed God’s instructions, we are called to honour and obey God’s commands in our lives.
