Deuteronomy 10:9

Posted on 3 July 2024
Listen to this article

“Wherefore Levi hath no part nor inheritance with his brethren; the Lord is his inheritance, according as the Lord thy God promised him.”

Historical Context:In the book of Deuteronomy, Moses addresses the Israelites just before they enter the Promised Land. He recounts their history, reiterates God’s laws, and emphasizes the importance of obedience and faithfulness to God.

The Tribe of Levi:Deuteronomy 10:9 specifically mentions the tribe of Levi. Among the twelve tribes of Israel, the tribe of Levi was set apart for a special role. They were chosen by God to serve as priests and assist in the spiritual affairs of the nation. Unlike the other tribes, the Levites did not receive a specific portion of land as their inheritance. Instead, their inheritance was the Lord Himself.

Levi’s Inheritance:The verse states that Levi has “no part nor inheritance with his brethren.” This means that the Levites did not receive a territorial allotment like the other tribes did. While each tribe received a portion of land to settle in and cultivate, the Levites were dispersed throughout the various cities of Israel to fulfill their priestly duties. Their service to God and the people was their inheritance.

The Lord is Levi’s Inheritance:The verse continues by saying, “the Lord is his inheritance, according as the Lord thy God promised him.” This statement highlights the special relationship between the Levites and God. The Lord Himself became the Levites’ inheritance. They were to find their sustenance, provision, and significance in their service to God and His people. They were dedicated to the Lord’s work and were supported by the tithes and offerings of the people.

Application and Lessons:

  • Prioritizing God: The tribe of Levi serves as a reminder that our primary focus should be on God and His work. They were chosen for a specific role, and they dedicated their lives to serving Him. We are also called to prioritise God in our lives and dedicate ourselves to His service.
  • Contentment and Trust: The Levites’ lack of an earthly inheritance teaches us about contentment and trust in God’s provision. They didn’t possess the land like their brethren, but they had the privilege of a unique relationship with God. It reminds us to find our ultimate fulfilment and inheritance in God rather than earthly possessions.
  • Spiritual Inheritance: As believers in Christ, we are part of a royal priesthood (1 Peter 2:9). We may not belong to the tribe of Levi, but we are called to serve God and be devoted to His work. Our inheritance is not limited to earthly treasures but encompasses the blessings and promises of our relationship with God.
  • Sacrificial Giving: The Levites relied on the tithes and offerings of the people for their provision. This teaches us the importance of sacrificial giving and supporting those who serve God full-time. It reminds us to be generous and faithful stewards of our resources.

In summary, Deuteronomy 10:9 emphasises the unique role of the tribe of Levi and their special relationship with God. It reminds us to prioritise God, find contentment in Him, and serve Him faithfully. We are also reminded of the importance of sacrificial giving and supporting those who serve God’s purposes.
