Deuteronomy 11:8

Posted on 3 July 2024
Listen to this article

“Therefore shall ye keep all the commandments which I command you this day, that ye may be strong, and go in and possess the land, whither ye go to possess it.”

Obedience to God’s commandments:The verse emphasises the importance of obedience to the commandments given by God. The Israelites were instructed to diligently keep all the commandments given to them by Moses. This adherence to God’s commands would bring them strength and enable them to enter and possess the land that God had promised to give them.

Strength through obedience:The act of keeping God’s commandments was not merely about following rules, but it had a deeper purpose. Obedience was meant to be a source of strength for the Israelites. By obeying God, they would receive His blessings and protection, which would empower them to face the challenges of possessing the land.

The Promised Land:God had made a covenant with the Israelites to give them the land of Canaan as their inheritance. However, possessing the land was contingent upon their obedience to His commandments. This verse reminds them of the connection between their obedience and their ability to enter and possess the land.

Lessons for believers today:While this verse was specifically addressed to the Israelites, there are broader spiritual principles that can apply to believers today. Obedience to God’s commandments is still important for Christians. Jesus emphasised the significance of obedience when He said, “If ye love me, keep my commandments” (John 14:15, KJV). Obedience to God’s Word brings spiritual strength, blessings, and enables us to walk in His purposes for our lives.
