Deuteronomy 13:17

Listen to this article

And there shall cleaue nought of the cursed thing to thine hand, that the Lord may turne from the fiercenesse of his anger, and shew thee mercy, and haue compassion vpon thee, and multiply thee, as he hath sworne vnto thy fathers; Deuteronomy 13:17 (KJV)

Deuteronomy, the fifth book of the Old Testament, records the final speeches of Moses to the Israelites. In this chapter Moses warns the people about false prophets and anyone who entices others to worship other gods.

The warning against idolatry is set out in Deuteronomy 13:1‑16. Moses instructs that even a family member or close friend who tempts the people to worship another god must not be yielded to; such individuals were to be put to death in order to preserve the purity of worship and the covenant with God.

Avoiding the influence of sin is emphasized in verse 16, which commands the Israelites not to let anything from a cursed city or the possessions of those who have turned to idolatry cling to their hands. This underscores the need for complete separation from anything associated with idolatrous practices as a demonstration of loyalty to God and commitment to His commandments.

Turning away God’s anger is the purpose of refusing any item from the cursed city. In verse 17 Moses reminds the people that the LORD will turn from the fierceness of His anger, show mercy, have compassion, and multiply them as He has sworn to their fathers. Observing these commands was seen as a way to secure God’s continued blessing.

The passage therefore underscores the importance of faithfulness and obedience. The Israelites were reminded that their relationship with God depended on their obedience and exclusive worship of Him. By obeying His instructions and rejecting idolatry they could expect His favor, multiplication, and the fulfillment of the promises made to their forefathers.

Application today: although the text addresses the ancient Israelites, the principles of faithfulness, obedience, and separation from sin remain relevant for believers. Christians are called to be distinct from the world and to avoid influences that lead to sinful practices, guarding their hearts and minds against anything that would draw them away from wholehearted devotion to God.

In conclusion, Deuteronomy 13:16‑17 emphasizes the necessity of avoiding idolatry and maintaining fidelity to God. By completely separating themselves from idolatrous influence, the Israelites sought God’s mercy, compassion, and blessings. The passage reminds us of the significance of faithfulness, obedience, and the need to guard ourselves against anything that could lead us astray from our commitment to God.
