Listen to this article

“For the poor shall never cease out of the land: therefore I command thee, saying, Thou shalt open thine hand wide unto thy brother, to thy poor, and to thy needy, in thy land.”

This verse is found in the book of Deuteronomy, which is part of the Old Testament and contains Moses’ final instructions to the Israelites before they entered the Promised Land. In this particular verse, Moses addresses the issue of poverty and the responsibility of the Israelites towards their less fortunate brothers and sisters.

Recognizing the reality of poverty:Moses begins by acknowledging that poverty will always exist in the land. This statement reflects the fallen nature of the world and the ongoing presence of economic inequality and need. It serves as a reminder that poverty is not simply an individual’s fault but is a societal issue.

God’s command to be generous:Despite the inevitability of poverty, God commands the Israelites to be open-handed and generous toward their fellow countrymen who are poor and in need. This instruction reveals God’s heart for compassion, justice, and the well-being of the community. The phrase “open thine hand wide” emphasizes the extent of generosity and the willingness to help.

Responsibility within the community:The command to help the poor and needy is not directed at a specific group or institution but to each individual within the community. It emphasizes personal responsibility and a collective obligation to care for those in need. This verse highlights the importance of fostering a sense of solidarity, empathy, and compassion within the community.

Contextual application:While this verse was specifically given to the Israelites in their historical context, its underlying principles can be applied today. It reminds believers of their responsibility to care for the poor, vulnerable, and marginalized in their society. It calls for generosity, kindness, and practical assistance towards those who are in need.

Overall, Deuteronomy 15:11 conveys God’s concern for the well-being of the poor and His expectation that His people demonstrate compassion and generosity toward them. It challenges us to consider our role in alleviating poverty and promoting justice in our communities, extending a helping hand to those in need as an expression of love and obedience to God’s commands.
