Deuteronomy 15:20

Posted on 10 July 2024
Listen to this article

“Thou shalt eat it before the Lord thy God year by year in the place which the Lord shall choose, thou and thy household.”

This verse is part of a larger passage in Deuteronomy 15 that deals with the regulations concerning the firstborn of animals. In the preceding verses, the Israelites are instructed to sanctify the firstborn of their herd or flock to the Lord. They were to refrain from doing any work with the firstborn animals and bring them to the place chosen by the Lord. Now, let’s dive deeper into the key points and lessons we can draw from this verse:

Obedience to God’s commands:The verse emphasises the importance of obedience to God’s instructions. The Israelites were required to bring the firstborn animals to the designated place before the Lord. This demonstrates their commitment to following God’s laws and honouring Him as their provider.

Worship and fellowship:By eating the firstborn animals before the Lord, the Israelites were engaging in an act of worship and fellowship with God. This act allowed them to express gratitude for His provision and acknowledge His authority over their lives. It served as a reminder of the covenant relationship between God and His people.

God’s chosen place:The verse mentions that the eating of the firstborn animals should take place in the place chosen by the Lord. Initially, this referred to the tabernacle, and later to the temple in Jerusalem. This requirement emphasised the centrality of worship and gathering together in the presence of God.

Household participation:The verse specifically includes the household in the act of eating the firstborn animal. This highlights the importance of involving the entire family in the worship and observance of God’s commands. It provided an opportunity for parents to teach their children about God’s faithfulness and the significance of His instructions.

Overall, Deuteronomy 15:20 reminds us of the importance of obedience, worship, and fellowship with God. It teaches us to honour God as our provider and to actively involve our families in acts of worship and devotion. While the context of this verse is specific to the Israelites and their sacrificial system, we can draw broader principles from it that apply to our relationship with God today. It’s essential to study the Bible in its entirety to understand the broader context and message of God’s Word.
