Deuteronomy 18:5

Listen to this article

“For the Lord thy God hath chosen him out of all thy tribes, to stand to minister in the name of the Lord, him and his sons forever.”

This verse is part of a larger passage in Deuteronomy 18 where Moses is addressing the Israelites and providing instructions regarding the Levites, the priestly tribe. Let’s explore the verse in its context and uncover its meaning and significance.

Context:In the book of Deuteronomy, Moses is delivering his final instructions to the Israelites before they enter the Promised Land. In this particular section, Moses is speaking about the Levites and their role in the religious life of Israel.

Meaning and Significance:

  • Chosen by God:The verse emphasises that God has chosen the Levites out of all the tribes of Israel. The Levites were set apart to serve the Lord in a special way. They were not given a portion of land like the other tribes but were appointed to carry out priestly duties and minister in the name of the Lord.
  • Ministry and Service:The verse mentions that the Levites were chosen to stand and minister in the name of the Lord. This highlights their role as intermediaries between the people and God. The Levites were responsible for offering sacrifices, leading worship, teaching the law, and performing various religious duties.
  • Hereditary Priesthood:The verse also mentions that the priesthood of the Levites was to be passed down through generations. The sons of the chosen Levite (referring to Aaron and his descendants) were to continue serving as priests in perpetuity. This establishes a hereditary priesthood within the tribe of Levi, with a focus on the Aaronic line.
  • Foreshadowing Christ:The Levitical priesthood and its functions served as a foreshadowing of the coming Messiah, Jesus Christ. Jesus would ultimately fulfil the role of the High Priest, offering Himself as the perfect sacrifice for the forgiveness of sins. The hereditary aspect of the Levitical priesthood finds its fulfilment in Jesus, who is described as a High Priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek (Hebrews 7:17).

Application:Though the Levitical priesthood no longer exists in the same way today, there are still valuable lessons we can draw from this verse:

  • Recognising God’s Calling:We should be mindful of the unique calling God has placed upon our lives. Just as the Levites were chosen by God for a specific purpose, each of us has a role to play in His kingdom.
  • Service and Ministry:The Levites were dedicated to serving God and ministering to His people. As Christians, we are called to serve and minister to others, using our gifts and talents to honour God and bless those around us.
  • Perpetual Priesthood of Christ:Reflecting on the hereditary priesthood of the Levites can deepen our understanding and appreciation of Jesus Christ as our eternal High Priest. Through His sacrifice, we have direct access to God, and He intercedes on our behalf.

In conclusion, Deuteronomy 18:5 highlights the selection of the Levites by God for the purpose of ministering in His name. It reminds us of the significance of our calling, the importance of service, and points us towards the ultimate fulfilment of priesthood in Jesus Christ.
