Deuteronomy 22:18

Posted on 13 August 2024
Listen to this article

“Then the elders of his city shall call him, and speak unto him: and if he stand to it, and say, I like not to take her.”

Context:Deuteronomy is part of the Old Testament and is the fifth book of the Bible. It contains the final teachings of Moses to the Israelites before they entered the Promised Land. The book addresses various aspects of their lives, including laws, morality, and worship.

Deuteronomy 22:18 is part of a larger section that deals with cases of accusations against a newly married woman. In this passage, the scenario presented is a man who accuses his wife of not being a virgin at the time of their marriage. Let’s break down the verse and explore its significance.

Accusation and Gathering of Elders:If a man accuses his wife of not being a virgin, he is to bring his accusation before the elders of the city. The involvement of the elders suggests that this was a serious matter to be addressed by the community rather than solely between the husband and wife.

Discussion and Response:The elders are to summon the husband and discuss the matter with him. The purpose of this discussion is to allow the husband to present his case and provide evidence for his accusation.

Confirmation or Denial:After hearing the husband’s testimony, he is given an opportunity to stand by his accusation or withdraw it. If the husband maintains his accusation, the situation is addressed according to the law provided in the following verses (Deuteronomy 22:19-21).

“I like not to take her”: The phrase “I like not to take her” can be understood as the husband’s denial of his initial accusation. It implies that he no longer wishes to continue with the process of accusing his wife and seeking punishment for her alleged offence.

It is important to note that this passage reflects the cultural and legal context of ancient Israel, specifically relating to marriage and accusations of infidelity. The purpose of such laws was to ensure the integrity and sanctity of marriage, and to maintain the purity and honour of the community.

This verse does not reflect the Christian perspective on marriage and divorce, which is further elaborated by Jesus in the New Testament (Matthew 19:3-9). Jesus emphasises the importance of love, forgiveness, and the preservation of marriage. Christians are called to approach marital conflicts and accusations with grace and seek reconciliation rather than seeking legal punishments.

In summary, Deuteronomy 22:18 addresses a specific case of accusations against a newly married woman and the subsequent legal process. While the verse provides insights into the cultural and legal practices of ancient Israel, it is important to interpret it in light of the broader teachings of the Bible, particularly the New Testament, which emphasise love, forgiveness, and reconciliation in marital relationships.
