Deuteronomy 22:21

Posted on 13 August 2024
Listen to this article

“Then they shall bring out the damsel to the door of her father’s house, and the men of her city shall stone her with stones that she die: because she hath wrought folly in Israel, to play the whore in her father’s house: so shalt thou put evil away from among you.”

Historical and Cultural Context:Deuteronomy is part of the Torah, the first five books of the Old Testament, attributed to Moses. It contains laws and instructions given by God to the Israelites as they were about to enter the Promised Land. The verse you mentioned deals with the Israelite community’s response to a woman who engaged in sexual immorality, specifically committing adultery prior to her marriage.

Understanding the Verse:In this verse, the “damsel” or young woman is accused of committing adultery while still residing in her father’s house. The punishment prescribed is death by stoning. This harsh penalty is seen as a means to remove evil from the community and ensure purity among God’s chosen people. It should be noted that the focus here is on the woman, not the man involved in the act, which reflects the patriarchal nature of the society and the emphasis on preserving family honour.

Moral and Theological Significance:

  • The Holiness of God:This verse underscores the importance of maintaining holiness and purity within the Israelite community. Adultery is considered a grave sin because it violates the sanctity of marriage and disrupts the social fabric. By administering such a severe punishment, the Israelites aimed to demonstrate their commitment to living in obedience to God’s laws.
  • Justice and Deterrence:The punishment of stoning, though harsh by contemporary standards, served as a deterrent against sexual immorality. It sent a clear message that such behaviour would not be tolerated within the Israelite society. The emphasis on community involvement in the execution of punishment reflects the communal responsibility for upholding moral standards.
  • Covenant Faithfulness:Adultery in the context of Israel’s covenant relationship with God symbolically represented spiritual unfaithfulness and idolatry. Just as God demanded loyalty and faithfulness from His people, so too the Israelites were expected to demonstrate fidelity within their marriages and relationships. This passage underscores the seriousness of unfaithfulness in all its forms.

Application and New Testament Perspective:It is important to approach this passage from a New Testament perspective and in light of Jesus’ teachings. Jesus emphasised mercy, forgiveness, and restoration, as demonstrated in His interactions with those who were caught in sexual sin (e.g., the woman caught in adultery in John 8:1-11). While the severity of the punishment in Deuteronomy 22:21 may seem foreign and incompatible with the New Testament teachings, it highlights the significance of purity and faithfulness in relationships. The New Testament emphasises the transformation of the heart through the power of the Holy Spirit and the forgiveness found in Jesus Christ.

In summary, Deuteronomy 22:21 addresses the issue of adultery and the severe punishment prescribed for it in the Old Testament context. It highlights the importance of maintaining holiness, justice, and faithfulness within the community. While we can draw moral and theological principles from this passage, as Christians, we should also interpret it in light of Jesus’ teachings on mercy, forgiveness, and the transformation of the heart.
