Deuteronomy 23:17

Listen to this article

There shalbe no whore of the daughters of Israel, nor a Sodomite of the sonnes of Israel. Deuteronomy 23:17 (KJV)

Context and Background: Deuteronomy is the fifth book of the Hebrew Bible and primarily contains the final teachings of Moses to the Israelites before they enter the Promised Land. It outlines laws, instructions, and principles that would govern their lives as they establish themselves as a nation.

Understanding the Terminology:

Whore: The term “whore” in this context refers to a woman who participates in cultic prostitution associated with pagan religious practices, emphasizing sexual immorality and a lack of fidelity within the community of Israel.

Sodomite: The term “sodomite” is a historical translation of the Hebrew word qadesh, denoting a male cult prostitute involved in Canaanite religious rituals, not a reference to homosexual acts in general.

Moral and Legal Context: This verse addresses two specific prohibitions within the Israelite community. First, it forbids female cult prostitutes from taking part in idolatrous worship practices, thereby preserving the exclusive worship of Yahweh and preventing assimilation into surrounding pagan cultures. Second, it prohibits male cult prostitutes from participating in similar idolatrous rites, reinforcing the same goal of spiritual purity and covenant fidelity.

Theological Implications: Deuteronomy 23:17 reflects the broader moral framework established by God for Israel, emphasizing the rejection of foreign religious practices and the maintenance of holiness in worship. By banning cultic prostitution, the law protects the community from spiritual corruption and upholds the covenant relationship between God and His people.

Application and Modern Relevance: While the specific prohibition was given to ancient Israel, the underlying principles can be applied today. Believers are called to remain faithful to God, avoiding any practices that compromise spiritual integrity. The passage reminds Christians to pursue holiness in all aspects of life, especially in matters of sexual conduct and worship. It encourages the pursuit of sexual purity, fidelity within marriage, and adherence to biblical sexual ethics. Approaching this verse with respect and love, and seeking guidance from trusted spiritual leaders, helps believers study Scripture with an open heart, discerning God’s truth and applying it wisely.

Remember, when studying the Bible, consider the broader context of Scripture, seek wise counsel, and study with humility and reverence.
