Deuteronomy 23:17

Posted on 13 August 2024
Listen to this article

“There shall be no whore of the daughters of Israel, nor a sodomite of the sons of Israel.”

Context and Background: Deuteronomy is the fifth book of the Hebrew Bible and primarily contains the final teachings of Moses to the Israelites before they enter the Promised Land. It outlines laws, instructions, and principles that would govern their lives as they establish themselves as a nation.

Understanding the Terminology:

Whore: The term “whore” in this context refers to a woman who engages in sexual immorality or prostitution. It is used to emphasize the importance of sexual purity and fidelity within the community of Israel.

Sodomite: The term “sodomite” refers to a person who practices homosexual acts or engages in same‑sex sexual relations.

Moral and Legal Context: This verse addresses two specific prohibitions within the Israelite community:

Prohibition of Whoredom: The verse forbids the daughters of Israel from becoming prostitutes or engaging in sexual immorality. This prohibition seeks to maintain sexual purity and the sanctity of marriage within the community, ensuring the integrity of family units.

Prohibition of Sodomy: The verse also prohibits the sons of Israel from engaging in homosexual acts or same‑sex relations. This directive emphasizes the importance of heterosexual relationships within the context of marriage as the ordained pattern for sexual expression.

Theological Implications: Deuteronomy 23:17 reflects the broader moral framework established by God for the Israelites. It underscores the significance of sexual purity, fidelity, and adherence to God’s moral standards. The emphasis on maintaining these standards within the community serves as a means of promoting holiness, safeguarding family structures, and ensuring the continuation of the covenant between God and the people of Israel.

Application and Modern Relevance: While Deuteronomy 23:17 was specifically addressed to the Israelites in their historical and cultural context, it carries underlying principles that can be applied today:

Sexual Purity: The verse encourages individuals to pursue sexual purity, promoting fidelity within the bounds of marriage.

Biblical Sexual Ethics: It upholds the biblical view that sexual relations are intended for the marriage covenant between one man and one woman.

Holiness: The verse serves as a reminder to strive for personal holiness in all areas of life, including sexual conduct. It is important to approach this verse and its teachings with respect and love, recognizing that different interpretations and understandings exist within various theological traditions.

Remember, when studying the Bible, it is beneficial to consider the broader context of Scripture, seek guidance from trusted spiritual leaders, and study with a heart open to understanding God’s truth and applying it with wisdom and love.
