Deuteronomy 26:6

Posted on 18 August 2024
Listen to this article

“And the Egyptians evil entreated us, and afflicted us, and laid upon us hard bondage.”

Context:Deuteronomy is part of the Pentateuch, the first five books of the Bible traditionally attributed to Moses. It contains the farewell speeches of Moses to the Israelites, who are about to enter the Promised Land. In this verse, Moses is reminding the Israelites of their history and the hardships they faced in Egypt.

Historical Background:The Israelites had been living in Egypt as slaves for over 400 years. They were subjected to harsh treatment and hard labour by the Egyptians. Pharaoh, the ruler of Egypt at that time, had enslaved the Israelites and imposed heavy burdens on them. The verse acknowledges the difficult circumstances and bondage they endured.

God’s Deliverance:The preceding verses in Deuteronomy 26 describe how God rescued the Israelites from Egypt and brought them into the land flowing with milk and honey, the Promised Land. Despite the Egyptians’ evil treatment, God heard the cry of His people and raised up Moses as their deliverer. Through a series of miraculous signs and wonders, God brought about their liberation from slavery and led them towards the land He had promised to give them.

Spiritual Significance:Deuteronomy 26:6 serves as a reminder of God’s faithfulness and deliverance. It highlights the contrast between the hardships of bondage in Egypt and the freedom and blessings the Israelites were about to receive in the Promised Land. It demonstrates God’s power to deliver His people from oppression and His desire to fulfill His promises.

Application:As believers today, we can draw lessons from this verse. It reminds us that God is aware of our struggles and hardships. He is a God of deliverance, capable of setting us free from any form of bondage. Just as the Israelites were brought out of slavery, we can trust in God’s faithfulness and seek His intervention in our own challenges. It also encourages us to reflect on the blessings and provisions God has granted us and respond with gratitude and worship.

In summary, Deuteronomy 26:6 emphasises the difficult circumstances the Israelites faced in Egypt and the bondage they endured. It highlights God’s faithfulness in delivering His people from oppression and reminds us of His power to bring freedom and blessings in our lives.
