Deuteronomy 27:25

Posted on 27 August 2024
Listen to this article

“Cursed be he that taketh reward to slay an innocent person. And all the people shall say, Amen.”

Context:Deuteronomy is the fifth book of the Bible and is part of the Torah, which contains the laws and instructions given by God to the Israelites. The book of Deuteronomy consists of Moses’ final sermons and addresses the Israelites just before they enter the Promised Land.

Deuteronomy 27:25 is part of a section known as the “Curses and Blessings,” where Moses instructs the people to pronounce curses upon various sins and offenses. This particular verse focuses on the curse placed upon someone who takes a bribe to kill an innocent person.

Key Points:

  • The Sanctity of Life:This verse emphasises the sanctity of human life. God values every individual, and the intentional taking of an innocent life is a grave offence. It reveals God’s concern for justice and His desire for His people to uphold the dignity and worth of every human being.
  • Condemnation of Corruption:The verse addresses the act of taking a bribe to slay an innocent person. It condemns not only the act of murder but also the corruption and wickedness associated with accepting a bribe to commit such an act. This highlights God’s abhorrence towards injustice, bribery, and the abuse of power.
  • The Importance of Accountability:By pronouncing a curse upon those who engage in this sinful behaviour, the verse emphasises the importance of personal accountability. It serves as a warning and deterrent against committing such a heinous act and demonstrates God’s desire for His people to be righteous and just in their dealings with others.
  • Community Responsibility:The concluding phrase, “And all the people shall say, Amen,” emphasises the communal aspect of the curse. The entire community is called to acknowledge the curse and affirm its validity. This communal response underscores the collective responsibility to uphold justice, condemn evil, and actively reject any form of corruption within the society.

Application:

  • Valuing Human Life:As believers, we are called to respect and value the sanctity of every human life. This includes refraining from any action or supporting any system that undermines the dignity and worth of others. We should actively promote justice and righteousness in our relationships, communities, and societies.
  • Rejecting Corruption:We should be vigilant in our personal lives to avoid engaging in corrupt practices, such as bribery, dishonesty, or abuse of power. Just as God detests corruption, we should pursue integrity and honesty in all our dealings.
  • Speaking Out Against Injustice:When we encounter situations where innocent lives are at stake or injustice prevails, we should not remain silent. We have a responsibility to speak out against evil, advocate for justice, and support those who are oppressed or marginalised.
  • Supporting Accountability:It is crucial to establish systems that promote accountability, both individually and within society. By holding ourselves and others accountable for our actions, we can create an environment that discourages corruption and upholds justice.

Remember that this study provides a brief overview of the verse, and further exploration of the surrounding context and related passages can provide deeper insights into its meaning and application.
