Deuteronomy 28:47
Because thou seruedst not the Lord thy God with ioyfulnesse, and with gladnesse of heart, for the aboundance of all things. Deuteronomy 28:47 (KJV)
Deuteronomy, the fifth book of the Old Testament, records Moses’ final address to the Israelites before they entered the Promised Land. In chapter 28 he sets before them a series of blessings for obedience and curses for disobedience, making clear that the nation’s future hinged on their response to God’s covenant.
Verse 47 underscores that a key factor in the curses was the people’s failure to serve the Lord their God with joyfulness and gladness of heart. The passage teaches that obedience is not merely external compliance but must be accompanied by a grateful, enthusiastic spirit toward God.
The Israelites had already enjoyed an abundance of blessings: deliverance from Egyptian slavery, daily provision in the wilderness, and guidance through the law. Yet their neglect to appreciate and serve God joyfully led to disobedience, which in turn brought about the curses described earlier in the chapter. Their attitude turned the gifts of God into a source of entitlement rather than gratitude.
The verse therefore reminds believers of the importance of gratitude and contentment in their relationship with God. Recognizing the abundance of all things He has bestowed should produce a heart of thankfulness that guards against a spirit of entitlement. Such gratitude fuels faithful, joyful service and keeps the believer aligned with God’s purposes.
Application for today is clear. Believers are invited to examine their own attitudes: Do we serve God with joyfulness and gladness of heart? Are we grateful for His abundant blessings in our lives? Cultivating a spirit of gratitude and contentment honors God and positions us to experience the fullness of His blessings and favour. While the specific promises and curses of Deuteronomy 28 were directed to Israel, the principles of obedience, joy, gratitude, and contentment remain timeless and applicable to every follower of Christ.
