Deuteronomy 29:21

Listen to this article

“And the LORD shall separate him unto evil out of all the tribes of Israel, according to all the curses of the covenant that are written in this book of the law.”

Context:Deuteronomy is the fifth book of the Old Testament and contains the final speeches of Moses to the Israelites before they enter the Promised Land. In this particular chapter, Moses is addressing the covenant that God made with the Israelites at Mount Sinai.

Covenant Background:The covenant mentioned here refers to the covenant between God and the people of Israel. It was established when God brought the Israelites out of Egypt and made a covenant with them at Mount Sinai. The covenant included blessings for obedience and curses for disobedience (Deuteronomy 28:1-68).

Separation unto Evil:The verse states that the Lord will separate the person being referred to "unto evil" out of all the tribes of Israel. This suggests that if an individual breaks the covenant and turns away from God, they will experience the consequences of their disobedience, which can include various forms of evil or calamity.

The Curses of the Covenant:The verse also mentions that the curses written in the "book of the law" will befall this individual. The curses are extensively described in Deuteronomy 28:15-68, and they encompass a wide range of afflictions, including diseases, crop failures, military defeat, and exile from the Promised Land.

Divine Justice and Consequences:This verse highlights the justice of God. It affirms that God will hold individuals accountable for their actions, ensuring that the consequences of breaking the covenant are realized. It serves as a reminder of the seriousness of obedience to God’s commandments and the potential repercussions of disobedience.

Lessons for Today:While this verse specifically addresses the Israelites under the Old Covenant, it can still hold important lessons for believers today. It emphasizes the significance of honouring our commitments and remaining faithful to God’s commands. It reminds us that God is just and that there are consequences for disobedience. However, it is important to note that in the New Testament, through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ, believers have received forgiveness and redemption, offering a way to be reconciled with God even if we fall short.

In conclusion, Deuteronomy 29:21 conveys the seriousness of breaking the covenant with God and the resulting consequences. It underscores the importance of obedience and faithfulness to God’s commandments. As believers, we can draw from this passage the significance of maintaining our commitment to God and recognising the justice and consequences that accompany our actions.
