Deuteronomy 29:28
And the Lord rooted them out of their land in anger, and in wrath, and in great indignation, and cast them into another land, as it is this day.
Deuteronomy 29:28 (KJV)
Context
Deuteronomy records Moses’ final speeches to the Israelites as they stand ready to enter the Promised Land. In this chapter, Moses renews the covenant that God made with Israel and warns them of the serious results of breaking it. The verse describes a future judgment: the Lord would uproot the people from their land because they turned away from Him.
Meaning
The phrase “rooted them out” means to pull up a plant completely, leaving nothing behind. This picture shows that God’s judgment would be forceful and total. The anger, wrath, and great indignation are not sudden or uncontrolled feelings. They are the righteous response of a holy God to persistent sin and idolatry. The people had forsaken the covenant and served other gods, so the Lord removed them from the land He had given them.
Biblical connections
This warning was fulfilled in Israel’s history. The Babylonians took the people into exile in 586 BC, and later the Romans scattered them after AD 70. These events show that God’s word is true and that He rules over nations. Yet this judgment is not the final word. The very next verse, Deuteronomy 29:29, teaches that the secret things belong to God, while the revealed things belong to His people forever, so that they may obey His law.
Application
For believers today, this verse is a serious reminder that God takes covenant faithfulness seriously. The Bible is the revealed word of God, and we are responsible to study it, obey it, and pass it on to our children. We should not treat sin lightly, because God’s holiness demands a response. At the same time, we can trust that God has shown us what He requires, and He gives us the grace to follow Him.
Reflection
God’s judgment on Israel leads us to humility. We cannot understand all of God’s ways, but we can trust His wisdom and His justice. The same God who judges sin is the God who reveals His will in Scripture. Our part is to obey what He has made known and to rely on His mercy through Jesus Christ, who bore God’s wrath for sin so that we might be reconciled to Him.
