Deuteronomy 31:28

Listen to this article

Gather vnto mee all the Elders of your tribes, and your Officers, that I may speake these words in their eares, and call heauen and earth to record against them. Deuteronomy 31:28 (KJV)

Deuteronomy belongs to the Pentateuch, the first five books of Scripture, traditionally ascribed to Moses. In this passage Moses is near the end of his life and is instructed to assemble the elders and officers of the Israelite tribes so that a solemn message may be delivered to the whole community.

Gathering of the Elders

Moses commands the gathering of the leaders—specifically the elders and officers—who held positions of authority and were responsible for the governance and administration of the people. Their role was to receive the divine instruction and to ensure it was communicated to the nation.

God’s Words

The purpose of the assembly is to convey God’s message. The following verses (Deuteronomy 31:29‑30; see also 31:14‑15) reveal that Moses foretells the Israelites’ future apostasy and the consequences that will follow if they turn away from the covenant. This serves as a solemn warning of the challenges they will face and the judgment that may come should they forsake God’s commands.

Call Heaven and Earth to Record

The phrase “call heaven and earth to record” invokes creation itself as witnesses to the covenant. It emphasizes the seriousness of the proclamation and the accountability of the people before God. Heaven and earth symbolize the enduring nature of God’s word and stand ready to testify against the nation should the covenant be broken.

Significance for Leadership and the Community

The passage highlights the responsibility of leaders to impart God’s teachings to those under their care. It underscores that obedience to God’s word is essential for the nation’s well‑being, and that deviation brings severe consequences. By gathering the elders, the community affirms the importance of collective remembrance of the covenant and the need for faithful adherence.

As readers explore the surrounding verses and the broader context of Deuteronomy, they will discover further insight into God’s guidance, His faithfulness to His promises, and the vital role of obedience in the life of God’s people.
