Deuteronomy 32:22

Listen to this article

“For a fire is kindled in mine anger, and shall burn unto the lowest hell, and shall consume the earth with her increase, and set on fire the foundations of the mountains.”

Deuteronomy 32:22 is part of a song of Moses, often referred to as the Song of Moses or the Song of Deuteronomy. This song is a prophetic warning and a reminder to the Israelites of their covenant with God. In this particular verse, Moses is describing the judgment and punishment that will come upon the Israelites if they turn away from God and follow after other gods.

Let’s break down the verse for a deeper understanding:

“For a fire is kindled in mine anger”: This phrase suggests the burning anger of God. It portrays His divine judgment against the Israelites for their rebellion and idolatry. It signifies the consequence of turning away from God’s commands and provoking His anger.

“And shall burn unto the lowest hell”: This phrase speaks of the severity and extent of God’s judgment. The “lowest hell” represents the deepest depths of Sheol, the realm of the dead or the place of punishment. It implies that God’s wrath will be thorough and encompassing.

“And shall consume the earth with her increase”: This phrase indicates the far-reaching consequences of God’s anger. It suggests that not only will the people be punished, but the land itself will also suffer. The “increase” refers to the produce, the fruitfulness of the land, and signifies that the judgment will affect all aspects of life.

“And set on fire the foundations of the mountains”: This phrase is a poetic expression depicting the extensive destruction caused by God’s anger. The foundations of the mountains, which are considered solid and unshakable, symbolize stability and permanence. The language used suggests that even the most secure and foundational elements of life will be affected by the judgment.

Overall, Deuteronomy 32:22 serves as a warning to the Israelites about the consequences of turning away from God and worshiping idols. It emphasizes the severity and comprehensiveness of God’s judgment, extending from the people to the land and even to the most solid foundations of existence. The verse underscores the importance of remaining faithful to God’s covenant and serves as a call to obedience.
