Remember the word which Moses the seruant of the Lord commanded you, saying, The Lord your God hath giuen you rest, and hath giuen you this land: Joshua 1:13 (KJV)
The book of Joshua records the events following the death of Moses and the leadership transition to Joshua. The Israelites stood on the brink of entering the Promised Land after forty years of wandering in the wilderness, and Joshua was chosen by God to lead them into Canaan. In this verse Joshua is reminded of the word that Moses, the servant of the Lord, had commanded the people: that the LORD their God had given them rest and the land itself. The reminder points back to the earlier promises recorded in Deuteronomy, where Moses first conveyed God’s covenant of rest and possession.
“Take ye the whole army with you, and go up, and possess the land, which the LORD your God hath given you.” This command underscores the practical step of moving forward in faith, not merely recalling a promise but acting on it by taking the whole army to claim the inheritance.
The concept of “rest” goes beyond physical cessation of labor. It signifies the fulfillment of God’s promises and the establishment of a settled, prosperous life in a land flowing with milk and honey. It marks the end of the wandering journey and the beginning of a stable, blessed existence under God’s provision.
The verse highlights God’s faithfulness in keeping His covenant despite the challenges of conquest. Joshua and the Israelites could draw strength from the assurance that God had already guaranteed victory and rest. This confidence in divine faithfulness invites believers today to trust in God’s promises. As Christians we can find assurance and spiritual rest in the promises of God’s Word, especially through the salvation offered in Jesus Christ.
The application calls believers to remember God’s faithfulness, trust His promises, and step into them with obedience. Just as Joshua was called to lead the people to possess the land, believers are called to actively pursue and claim the promises of God in their lives, living according to His will and relying on His guidance. In conclusion, Joshua 1:13 reminds us of God’s unwavering faithfulness, urging us to trust, obey, and find rest in the abundant life He has prepared for us.
