Joshua 2:12

Listen to this article

“Now therefore, I pray you, swear unto me by the LORD, since I have shewed you kindness, that ye will also shew kindness unto my father’s house, and give me a true token.”

Joshua 2:12 is part of the narrative that describes Joshua sending two spies into the city of Jericho to gather information in preparation for the Israelite conquest of the land. In this verse, one of the spies, who had entered the house of a prostitute named Rahab, is speaking to her.

Context:Before diving into the verse itself, it’s important to understand the context: The Israelites had been wandering in the wilderness for forty years after their deliverance from Egypt. Now, under the leadership of Joshua, they were poised to enter the promised land and take possession of it. Jericho was the first major city they encountered, and Joshua sent these spies to gather intelligence about the city’s defenses.

Rahab’s request for a covenant:In Joshua 2:12, Rahab asks the spies to make a solemn oath by the name of the LORD, seeking their assurance that they will show kindness to her and her family. This request reveals Rahab’s understanding that the Israelites are about to conquer the city, and she recognizes the power of their God, the LORD. Rahab pleads for protection and mercy not only for herself but also for her family.

Rahab’s kindness:Rahab’s appeal for kindness is rooted in her previous act of kindness toward the spies. In earlier verses, she had hidden the Israelite spies and helped them evade capture, risking her own life in the process. Her kindness and faith in the Israelite God led her to protect the spies and acknowledge their God as the true God. Rahab’s kindness:

The importance of a true token:Rahab also requests a “true token” or a sign from the spies. This is a tangible assurance that they would indeed spare her family when the Israelites conquered Jericho. Rahab needed evidence of their sincerity and trustworthiness to secure the safety of her loved ones. This request for a token indicates her genuine desire to be saved and her recognition of the importance of God’s covenant.

Overall, Joshua 2:12 highlights Rahab’s courageous faith and her understanding of the power and faithfulness of the LORD. It also demonstrates the compassion and mercy of God, as seen in the protection of Rahab and her family. This verse sets the stage for the remarkable story of Rahab’s redemption and inclusion in the lineage of Jesus Christ, as mentioned in Matthew 1:5.
