Joshua 4:21

Listen to this article

"And he spake unto the children of Israel, saying, When your children shall ask their fathers in time to come, saying, What mean these stones?"

Context:Joshua 4 records the events that took place after the Israelites crossed the Jordan River on dry ground, similar to how they had crossed the Red Sea during the time of Moses. In this chapter, God commanded Joshua to choose twelve men, one from each tribe, to take stones from the middle of the Jordan River and set them up as a memorial in Gilgal.

Commemoration:The purpose of setting up these stones was to serve as a visual reminder of God’s faithfulness and the miraculous event of the Israelites’ crossing. The stones were meant to provoke curiosity and initiate a conversation among the generations to come.

Passing on the Story:God anticipated that the children of Israel would ask about the meaning of these stones in the future. This verse emphasises the importance of passing down the stories and testimonies of God’s faithfulness to future generations. It highlights the responsibility of parents to teach their children about God’s works and the history of His people.

Teaching Moments:The question, "What mean these stones?" provides an opportunity for parents to share the stories of God’s faithfulness, miracles, and interventions in the lives of His people. It underscores the importance of sharing personal testimonies and experiences with God, both individually and corporately, as a means of strengthening faith and passing it on to the next generation.

Remembering God’s Faithfulness:In addition to the stones themselves, the entire event of crossing the Jordan River served as a reminder of God’s faithfulness. It was a pivotal moment for the Israelites, affirming God’s presence with them and His fulfilment of His promises. The stones were a tangible representation of God’s faithfulness and a symbol for the future generations to reflect on.

Application:

  • As believers today, we can learn from this passage by recognising the importance of intentionally passing down our faith to the next generation. We should take the opportunity to share God’s faithfulness and the stories of His work in our lives with our children and those around us.
  • We can create physical or symbolic reminders of God’s faithfulness in our lives and display them as a witness to His goodness and provision. These reminders can help us remember God’s faithfulness during challenging times and serve as a testimony to others.
  • We should be prepared to answer questions about our faith and the significance of our beliefs. By engaging in open and honest conversations, we can help others understand the meaning and relevance of our relationship with God.

Remember, the ultimate goal of sharing the stories of God’s faithfulness is to bring glory to His name and to encourage others in their faith journey.
