Joshua 6:3

Listen to this article

“And ye shall compass the city, all ye men of war, and go round about the city once. Thus shalt thou do six days.”

This verse is part of God’s instructions to Joshua, the successor of Moses, regarding the conquest of Jericho. Let’s explore the context and key themes of this passage.

Historical Context:The Israelites had been wandering in the wilderness for forty years after their exodus from Egypt. Now, under Joshua’s leadership, they were ready to enter the Promised Land, which God had assured them. Jericho was the first city they encountered in their conquest of Canaan.

The Strategy:In this verse, God gives Joshua a specific strategy to follow. The strategy involves the Israelite army marching around the city of Jericho once for six consecutive days. The purpose of this command becomes clear in the subsequent verses.

Symbolism and Faith:The strategy outlined in Joshua 6:3 is not a conventional military tactic but rather a symbolic act of faith and obedience. It requires the Israelites to trust in God’s plan, even though it may not make immediate sense from a human perspective. This act of obedience demonstrated their reliance on God’s power rather than their own.

Lessons for Believers:

  • Trust in God’s guidance: Joshua’s obedience to God’s instructions teaches us the importance of trusting in God’s guidance, even when His plans may seem unconventional or challenging. It reminds us that God’s ways are higher than our ways (Isaiah 55:9) and that His wisdom surpasses our understanding.
  • Faith in God’s promises: God had promised the Israelites that He would deliver the land of Canaan into their hands. The strategy for conquering Jericho tested their faith in His promise. Similarly, as believers, we are called to trust in God’s promises, even in the face of obstacles or difficulties.
  • Obedience as an expression of faith: Joshua’s obedience to God’s commands demonstrated his faith in action. It reminds us that faith without works is dead (James 2:26). Our obedience to God’s Word is an essential aspect of our relationship with Him.

Overall, Joshua 6:3 serves as a reminder of the Israelites’ trust in God’s plan, their willingness to follow His instructions, and the significance of faith and obedience in the life of a believer. It encourages us to trust in God’s guidance, have faith in His promises, and express our faith through obedient actions.
