Joshua 8:27

Only the cattle and the spoil of that city Israel took for a prey unto themselves, according unto the word of the Lord which he commanded Joshua.

Context

Joshua 8 records Israel’s victory over Ai. This success came after a painful defeat caused by Achan’s sin, described in Joshua 7. Once that sin was exposed and judged, God gave Joshua a specific battle plan for Ai. The Lord also gave clear permission for Israel to take the city’s cattle and spoil as their own. Verse 27 closes this account by showing that Israel followed that command exactly.

Meaning

The phrase “according unto the word of the Lord which he commanded Joshua” is the heart of the verse. Taking the spoil was not an act of greed. It was an act of obedience. God had already told Joshua in Joshua 8:2 that Israel could take the cattle and spoil as prey. The people did precisely what God had said. Their obedience covered even this detail of the battle, showing that no part of God’s instruction was unimportant.

Biblical connections

This verse connects directly to the earlier failure at Ai. In Joshua 7, Achan took forbidden plunder from Jericho, and Israel suffered defeat. Here, the people took plunder only because God had allowed it. The contrast is clear: disobedience brought judgment, while obedience brought blessing. The spoil of Ai included cattle and other goods, but the main point is that Israel received it lawfully. This event also fulfills God’s promise to give Canaan to Israel, as stated in Joshua 1:2-6. The victory at Ai was a step in that larger plan.

Application

God’s commands are specific, and He expects us to follow them carefully. Even matters that seem small, like the distribution of goods, matter to Him. When we obey God fully, we can trust Him to lead us to success. But when we ignore His instructions, we invite trouble. This verse also teaches the value of accountability. Achan’s sin affected the whole nation, and his confession and judgment restored the community. Believers should deal with disobedience quickly and honestly, both personally and together.

Reflection

God is faithful to His word. He kept His promise to give Israel the land, and He will keep His promises to us. Temporary setbacks do not cancel His plans. The same God who gave victory at Ai can give victory in our lives when we walk in obedience. Let us examine our hearts and ask whether we are following God’s instructions completely, even in the details. His word is trustworthy, and His timing is perfect.
