Listen to this article

Come vp vnto me, and helpe me, that we may smite Gibeon: for it hath made peace with Ioshua, and with the children of Israel. Joshua 10:4 (KJV)

Historical Context: Joshua 10 is part of the narrative of the conquest of Canaan by the Israelites under the leadership of Joshua. The Israelites had made a covenant with the Gibeonites, a group of Canaanite people who deceived Joshua into making a peace treaty with them. When other Canaanite kings learned of this alliance, they gathered to attack Gibeon.

The Deception of the Gibeonites: Before discussing verse 4, it is important to note the events leading up to it. In Joshua 9 the Gibeonites, fearing the advancing Israelites, disguised themselves as ambassadors from a distant land and successfully deceived Joshua and the Israelite leaders into a treaty of peace and protection. The Israelites entered this treaty without first consulting the Lord.

The Call for Assistance: In verse 4 one of the Canaanite kings, Adonizedek of Jerusalem, summons the other Canaanite kings to come together and attack Gibeon because it had made peace with Joshua and the children of Israel. Adonizedek urges his allies to join forces against Gibeon.

Joshua’s Response: When the Canaanite coalition attacked, the Gibeonites sent messengers to Joshua asking for help. Joshua responded by gathering his forces and coming to their aid, fulfilling the covenant he had made with them despite the deception that preceded it.

Lessons and Applications:

The importance of keeping one’s word: Despite the circumstances of the treaty with the Gibeonites, Joshua understood the value of honoring commitments. This emphasizes integrity and the need to keep one’s word even when the agreement was not made under ideal conditions.

The consequences of deception: The Israelites’ failure to seek the Lord’s guidance before the treaty led to a deceptive alliance. This serves as a reminder of the dangers of deception and the necessity of seeking God’s wisdom in decision‑making.

Seeking help in times of need: Joshua’s call for assistance demonstrates the importance of seeking help and support from allies when facing overwhelming challenges. It reminds believers that they need not face difficulties alone but can rely on the strength and support of fellow believers.

Overall, Joshua 10:4 provides insight into the complex dynamics of Israel’s conquest of Canaan and highlights enduring lessons on integrity, discernment, and the value of communal support in times of crisis.
