Joshua 11:12

Posted on 3 October 2024
Listen to this article

And all the cities of those kings, and all the kings of them, did Ioshua take, and smote them with the edge of the sword, and he vtterly destroied them, as Moses the seruant of the Lord commanded. Joshua 11:12 (KJV)

Historical Context: Joshua 11:12 is part of the account of Joshua’s conquest of the Promised Land, the fulfillment of God’s promise to the Israelites. The verse refers specifically to the cities and kings that Joshua conquered in the northern region of Canaan.

Divine Command: In this verse Joshua carried out the command of God, previously given through Moses, to utterly destroy the Canaanite cities and their kings because of the wickedness and idolatry that pervaded those nations (cf. Deuteronomy 7:1‑2). The command was a judgment upon those peoples, not a directive for senseless violence.

Obedience and Trust: Joshua’s obedience to God’s command is evident in his actions. Despite the challenges of facing numerous kings and their armies, he was determined to carry out God’s will. His trust in God’s promises and guidance enabled the Israelites to achieve victory.

Spiritual Lessons: The passage teaches several enduring truths. First, obedience to God’s commands remains essential, even when the instructions seem difficult or unpopular. Second, the conquest illustrates God’s holiness and His judgment against sin, reminding believers to confront and eradicate sin in their own lives and to engage in spiritual battles relying on God’s strength and the spiritual weapons He provides. Third, the success of the campaign testifies to God’s faithfulness in fulfilling His promises, encouraging believers to trust that He will empower them to overcome obstacles.

Application: While the verse records a specific historical event, it does not endorse or justify violence in every circumstance. God’s commands to Joshua were unique to that time and place as part of His sovereign plan for Israel. As Christians we are called to love our enemies, pray for those who persecute us, and proclaim God’s love and forgiveness. Our battles are primarily spiritual, and we combat evil through prayer, obedience to Scripture, and the power of the Holy Spirit.

In summary, Joshua 11:12 highlights Joshua’s faithful obedience to the command to destroy the Canaanite cities and kings, underscores the importance of trusting God’s guidance, affirms His faithfulness, and offers spiritual lessons about confronting sin and engaging in spiritual warfare.
