Joshua 11:22

Listen to this article

“There was none of the Anakims left in the land of the children of Israel: only in Gaza, in Gath, and in Ashdod, there remained.”

Context:The book of Joshua is part of the Old Testament and records the events surrounding the conquest of the Promised Land by the Israelites under the leadership of Joshua. In this particular verse, Joshua is reflecting on the success of the Israelites in defeating the various kings and nations in the land.

The Anakims:The Anakims were a group of people who were known for their tall stature. They were descendants of Anak, who was a prominent figure among the giants (Nephilim) mentioned in the book of Genesis (Genesis 6:4). The Anakims were among the inhabitants of Canaan, the land that God had promised to give to the Israelites.

Victory over the Anakims:Joshua 11 recounts the military campaigns of the Israelites against the various kingdoms in Canaan. In verse 21, it is mentioned that Joshua and the Israelites “cut off the Anakims from the mountains, from Hebron, from Debir, from Anab, and from all the mountains of Judah, and from all the mountains of Israel.” So, by the time we reach verse 22, we learn that there were no more Anakims left in the land of the children of Israel, except in three Philistine cities: Gaza, Gath, and Ashdod.

Significance of the Victory:The victory over the Anakims was significant because they were seen as formidable opponents due to their tall stature and military prowess. Their defeat symbolized God’s faithfulness to His promise of giving the land of Canaan to the Israelites and their ability to overcome seemingly insurmountable obstacles with God’s help.

Spiritual Lessons:

  • God’s faithfulness:The conquest of the Anakims reminds us of God’s faithfulness in fulfilling His promises. Despite the challenges and opposition, God remained true to His word and enabled the Israelites to overcome their enemies. This serves as a reminder that God is faithful to fulfill His promises in our lives as well.
  • Trust in God’s strength:The victory over the Anakims emphasizes the importance of relying on God’s strength rather than our own abilities. The Israelites could not have defeated such formidable foes on their own, but they trusted in the Lord and experienced His deliverance. In our own lives, we are called to trust in God’s strength and seek His guidance in every situation.
  • Perseverance and obedience:The conquest of the Anakims required the Israelites to persevere in their obedience to God’s commands. They had to remain committed to the task at hand, follow God’s instructions, and continue fighting until the victory was achieved. This teaches us the importance of perseverance and obedience in our own spiritual journey.

Application:

  • Trust in God’s promises:Just as God fulfilled His promise to give the land of Canaan to the Israelites, we can trust in God’s promises for our lives. He is faithful and will never let us down.
  • Seek God’s strength:When faced with challenges, we should not rely solely on our own strength but instead turn to God for help. He is our source of strength and will provide us with the wisdom and power we need.
  • Persevere in obedience:Following God’s commands may not always be easy, but we are called to persevere in obedience. We should remain faithful to His Word and His leading, trusting that He will bring about victory in His perfect timing.
