Joshua 12:11

The king of Jarmuth, one; the king of Lachish, one;

Joshua 12:11 (KJV)

Joshua 12 records the kings defeated by Israel during the conquest of Canaan. This verse names two of them: the king of Jarmuth and the king of Lachish. Both cities appear earlier in Joshua 10, where they joined a coalition of five Amorite kings who attacked Gibeon. Joshua defeated that alliance, and the summary here counts each conquered ruler. The list is part of a larger record that shows God’s faithfulness in fulfilling His promise to give the land to Abraham’s descendants.

The repeated word “one” after each king stresses completeness. No ruler is forgotten; every enemy is accounted for. Jarmuth lay in the hill country of Judah, while Lachish stood southwest of Jerusalem as a strong Canaanite fortress. Their capture showed that even well-defended cities could not stand against God’s purpose for Israel. Each king was counted, underscoring the thoroughness of the victory.

Joshua 10:3 names the king of Jarmuth as Piram and the king of Lachish as Japhia. That earlier chapter describes how the Lord fought for Israel, casting down great stones from heaven and causing the sun to stand still. The list in Joshua 12 confirms that the victory was total and that God kept His promise to give Abraham’s descendants the land. This record serves as a historical testimony of God’s deliverance.

These verses teach that God is faithful to His word. The Israelites faced real opposition, yet they advanced because they trusted His guidance. Believers today can rely on the same faithfulness when facing obstacles. The conquest also reminds us that our struggles are not only physical but spiritual, and we overcome through prayer, Scripture, and obedience.

  • Trust God’s promises even when the enemy seems strong.

  • Persevere through difficulties, depending on His strength.

  • Give thanks for every victory He provides.

God keeps a record of His works. Just as He counted each defeated king, He knows every battle His people face. This should encourage us to walk in faith, knowing that the Lord who fought for Israel remains the same today. His faithfulness endures, and His promises are sure.
