Joshua 14:5

Posted on 8 October 2024
Listen to this article

“As the LORD commanded Moses, so the children of Israel did, and they divided the land.”

Context: The book of Joshua is a continuation of the narrative in the Old Testament, following the death of Moses. Joshua, Moses’ successor, leads the Israelites into the Promised Land. In this verse, we see the fulfilment of the Lord’s command to Moses regarding the division of the land among the tribes of Israel.

Obedience to God’s Commands: The verse emphasises the obedience of the children of Israel to the Lord’s command through Moses. It shows that they followed through with what God had instructed, and they proceeded to divide the land according to His direction. Obedience was a crucial aspect of their relationship with God, and it played a significant role in the fulfilment of His promises.

Importance of God’s Promises: This verse highlights the significance of God’s promises to the Israelites. The land they were dividing was the long‑awaited fulfilment of God’s covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. God had promised to give them this land as an inheritance, and now they were experiencing the realisation of that promise. It serves as a reminder that God is faithful to His promises and that His word will always come to pass.

Trusting in God’s Guidance: The verse also demonstrates the trust the Israelites had in God’s guidance. They were willing to follow His commandments, even when it required them to undertake the challenging task of dividing the land among the twelve tribes. They relied on God’s wisdom and direction, acknowledging that He was leading them into the full possession of the land He had promised.

Application for believers today:

Obedience: Just as the children of Israel were called to obey God’s commands, believers today are also called to obey His teachings found in the Bible. Obedience is a vital aspect of our relationship with God and leads to blessings and fulfilment of His promises in our lives.

Trust: Like the Israelites, we should trust in God’s guidance and direction in our lives. Even when faced with challenging situations or uncertain paths, we can rely on His wisdom and leading. Trusting in God’s faithfulness enables us to navigate through life’s challenges with confidence.

God’s Promises: The fulfilment of God’s promises to the Israelites reminds us of His faithfulness. We can take comfort in knowing that God keeps His promises, and His plans for our lives will come to pass in His perfect timing.

Inheritance: The land symbolised the inheritance the Israelites received from God. Similarly, as believers, we have an eternal inheritance through our faith in Jesus Christ. We are heirs of God and joint‑heirs with Christ (Romans 8:17), and we can look forward to the future fulfilment of God’s promises in our lives.

In conclusion, Joshua 14:5 showcases the obedience, trust, and faithfulness of the children of Israel in following God’s commands and receiving the land as their inheritance. As believers today, we can draw lessons from this passage by emphasising obedience, trusting in God’s guidance, and clinging to the fulfilment of His promises in our lives.
