Joshua 14:10

And now, behold, the Lord hath kept me alive, as he said, these forty and five years, even since the Lord spake this word unto Moses, while the children of Israel wandered in the wilderness: and now, lo, I am this day fourscore and five years old.

Joshua 14:10 (KJV)

Joshua 14 records the division of the Promised Land among the tribes of Israel. Caleb, one of the two faithful spies who had explored Canaan with Joshua, now approaches Joshua to claim the inheritance Moses promised him. This verse is part of Caleb’s speech as he recounts God’s faithfulness and his own remarkable longevity.

Caleb acknowledges that the Lord has kept him alive for forty-five years, exactly as He said. The phrase “as he said” underscores that Caleb’s survival is not luck or natural vigor, but the direct fulfillment of God’s promise. He is now eighty-five years old, and he speaks with gratitude, not complaint, even though those years included the wilderness wandering.

God’s faithfulness

Caleb’s words highlight God’s unwavering faithfulness. When Moses sent twelve spies into Canaan, Caleb and Joshua brought back a faithful report, trusting that God would give them the land, while the other ten spies spread fear among the people. Because Caleb followed the Lord wholeheartedly, God promised that he would enter the land and inherit it. This verse shows that God keeps His word across decades, even when circumstances seem to delay the promise.

Wilderness wandering

Caleb refers to the years “since the Lord spake this word unto Moses, while the children of Israel wandered in the wilderness.” After Israel’s refusal to enter Canaan, the nation spent forty years in the wilderness because of unbelief. That entire generation, except Joshua and Caleb, died in the wilderness. Caleb was preserved through those years, not because the journey was easy, but because God’s promise sustained him.

Caleb’s age

At eighty-five, Caleb is a living testimony of divine strength. His age is not a sign of frailty but of God’s blessing on a life of faithful obedience. In the following verses, Caleb declares that he is still as strong as he was when Moses sent him, and he asks for the hill country of Hebron, confident that the Lord will help him drive out the Anakim.

The account of the spies’ report and Israel’s rebellion, which led to the wilderness judgment, is recorded in Numbers 13 and 14. Caleb’s wholehearted devotion is specifically noted in Numbers 14:24, where God promises to bring him into the land because he had a different spirit and followed God fully.

Caleb’s example teaches us to trust God’s promises even when others doubt. He waited forty-five years without losing hope, and he actively claimed what God had promised. His life encourages us to remain faithful through long seasons of waiting, knowing that God’s timing is perfect and His word never fails.

  • Faithfulness and trust in God: Caleb’s unwavering faith in God’s promises is exemplary. He believed God would fulfill His word, even when others doubted.

  • Patience and perseverance: Caleb waited forty-five years to see the promise fulfilled. He did not give up during the long years of wandering.

  • Active participation: Caleb did not passively wait; he approached Joshua and reminded him of the promise, asserting his rightful claim.

  • Strength and vitality in old age: Caleb’s vigor at eighty-five highlights the blessings that come from a life lived in faithful obedience to God.

Joshua 14:10 reminds us that God is faithful to His promises, and that a life of wholehearted devotion brings strength and blessing. Caleb’s testimony encourages us to trust God’s word, persevere through waiting, and actively embrace the inheritance He has prepared for us.
