Joshua 16:7

And it went down from Janohah to Ataroth, and to Naarath, and came to Jericho, and went out at Jordan.

Joshua 16:7 (KJV)

This verse belongs to the account of dividing the land of Canaan among the tribes of Israel. After forty years in the wilderness, Joshua led the people into the Promised Land. Here the boundary of Ephraim’s inheritance is traced from Janohah to Ataroth, then to Naarath, reaching Jericho and ending at the Jordan River. This detailed record is part of a larger section describing the borders of Ephraim’s territory, given to the descendants of Joseph.

The named places mark the southern edge of Ephraim’s land. Janohah, Ataroth, and Naarath were real towns or landmarks, though their exact locations are not all known today. The line ends at the Jordan, the river the Israelites crossed by God’s power. This precise record shows that the land was a concrete gift, not a vague promise. The verse’s accuracy in naming towns and landmarks emphasizes the historical reality of God’s provision.

Jericho appears here as the first city conquered in Canaan, where God displayed His might. The boundary touching the Jordan recalls the miraculous crossing in Joshua 3. This allotment fulfills Jacob’s blessing on Joseph’s sons in Genesis 48, giving Ephraim a lasting portion. The various translations of this verse all convey the same geographical movement, confirming the historical nature of the account.

God’s promises are specific and reliable. Just as He gave Ephraim a measurable inheritance, He provides for His people in tangible ways. Believers can trust that God guides them to their own place of blessing, even when the path includes boundaries and landmarks that seem ordinary. The faithful reception of God’s gifts involves recognizing and inhabiting the places He provides.

This verse invites gratitude for God’s faithful provision. The detailed boundaries remind us that God cares about the concrete details of life. He is not distant but involved, giving each person a place to dwell and a heritage to enjoy.
