Joshua 17:15

Posted on 18 October 2024
Listen to this article

"And Joshua answered them, If thou be a great people, then get thee up to the wood country, and cut down for thyself there in the land of the Perizzites and of the giants, if mount Ephraim be too narrow for thee."

Context:Joshua 17 records the allotment of the land of Canaan among the tribes of Israel. In this particular verse, the descendants of Joseph, represented by the tribes of Manasseh and Ephraim, are requesting more land because they feel that the portion they have received is not enough.

Identifying the issue:The descendants of Joseph were concerned that the portion of land they received was insufficient for their large population. They approached Joshua with their request for additional territory.

Joshua’s response:Joshua acknowledges their request and provides a practical solution. He suggests that if they consider themselves to be a great and numerous people, they should expand into the wood country, a region inhabited by the Perizzites and the giants, where they can clear the land and establish their presence.

Lessons from the passage:

  • Contentment:The descendants of Joseph, despite receiving a significant portion of the land, were still dissatisfied. This reminds us of the importance of contentment and gratitude for what we have been given. It is easy to fall into a mindset of always wanting more, but we should learn to be content and trust in God’s provision.
  • Diligence and responsibility:Joshua’s response to the tribes of Manasseh and Ephraim shows the importance of taking responsibility and being proactive. Instead of waiting for someone else to solve their problem, Joshua encourages them to take the initiative, work hard, and expand into the wood country.
  • Overcoming challenges:The wood country mentioned in the verse was inhabited by the Perizzites and giants, which presented a challenge for the tribes of Manasseh and Ephraim. Similarly, we often encounter obstacles and opposition in life. This verse teaches us to face challenges head-on, trusting in God’s strength and guidance to overcome them.

Application:

  • Gratitude and contentment:Reflect on the blessings and provisions God has given you, and cultivate a heart of gratitude. Learn to be content with what you have and avoid constantly desiring more.
  • Initiative and hard work:Take responsibility for your situation and be proactive in pursuing your goals. Instead of waiting for opportunities to come your way, seek them out and work diligently to achieve them.
  • Trust in God’s strength:When facing challenges and obstacles, rely on God’s strength and guidance. Remember that with God, nothing is impossible, and He can help you overcome any difficulties you encounter.

By studying Joshua 17:15 in this manner, we can gain practical insights and apply the lessons learned to our own lives, growing in faith and obedience.
