Joshua 18:5
And they shall diuide it into seuen parts: Iudah shall abide in their coast on the South, and the house of Ioseph shall abide in their coasts on the North. Joshua 18:5 (KJV)
The Book of Joshua records the events after Moses’ death, when Joshua led the Israelites into the Promised Land. By the time the land allocations were completed, most of the territory had been conquered, and the allotments were made for all twelve tribal groups (with the Levites receiving cities rather than a contiguous inheritance).
In this verse, Joshua addresses the remaining tribes and instructs them to divide the remaining unconquered land into seven parts. According to the biblical account, each tribe received its own portion of Canaan. The tribe of Judah was assigned to the southern region, while the house of Joseph (comprised of the half‑tribes of Ephraim and Manasseh) was to settle in the northern region. The divisions were organized tribe by tribe rather than as a single division of “seven parts” of unconquered land.
The division of the land among the tribes required cooperation and unity among the Israelites. Each tribe had a responsibility to establish its allotted portion, ensuring that all the tribes could settle in their respective territories. This distribution was not only a practical arrangement but also a way to maintain unity and solidarity, contributing to the overall stability and unity of the nation.
The fulfilment of the promise of the land of Canaan to the Israelites demonstrates God’s faithfulness to His covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. The allocation of the land was a tangible manifestation of God’s provision and His commitment to His chosen people, reminding the Israelites that God was with them, leading and guiding them in the fulfilment of His promises.
