Joshua 18:6
Ye shall therfore describe the land into seuen parts, and bring the description hither to me: that I may cast lots for you here before the Lord our God. Joshua 18:6 (KJV)
The book of Joshua records the events that followed the Israelites’ crossing of the Jordan River and their entry into the Promised Land. In chapter 18 the nation had not yet fully possessed the inheritance allotted to each tribe, and the focus turns to the remaining tribes that had not yet received their portions.
Joshua instructed the children of Israel to send three men from each tribe to survey the land, to mark its boundaries and note its characteristics, and to describe it according to the inheritances each tribe would receive. After this careful survey the land was divided into seven parts as directed in the preceding verses.
Having the land described and divided, Joshua planned to cast lots before the Lord in order to determine which tribe would receive each portion. The casting of lots was a recognized method of seeking divine guidance and of making decisions that honored God’s direction.
Casting lots was a common practice in ancient Israel for important decisions. Though it might appear random, the Israelites believed the outcome was guided by God. Proverbs 16:33 declares, “The lot is cast into the lap, but its every decision is from the LORD,” underscoring that the ultimate authority over the distribution lay with God.
From this passage we learn several timeless principles. First, trusting God’s sovereignty: Joshua’s reliance on the lot reminds believers to seek God’s guidance and to surrender personal plans, acknowledging that He is ultimately in control of every decision.
Second, fairness and equity: the careful division of land among the tribes highlights the importance of justice and equality, ensuring that each tribe received a portion appropriate to its size and needs.
Third, seeking God’s will: the Israelites used the lot as a means of discerning divine purpose. Today believers can pursue God’s will through prayer, study of Scripture, wise counsel, and sensitivity to the Holy Spirit, aligning their choices with God’s purposes.
As we reflect on Joshua 18:6, may we be reminded to trust in God’s sovereignty, pursue fairness and equity, and earnestly seek His will in all our decision‑making processes.
