Joshua 19:50

According to the word of the Lord they gave him the city which he asked, even Timnath–serah in mount Ephraim: and he built the city, and dwelt therein.

Context

This verse closes the account of dividing the Promised Land among the tribes of Israel. After the tribes received their portions, the people gave Joshua his own inheritance. He chose Timnathserah in the hill country of Ephraim, the tribe to which he belonged. The gift came “according to the word of the LORD,” showing that the whole division followed divine direction, not human preference. The phrase may point to the oracle of Urim and Thummim consulted by Eleazar the priest, or to what the LORD had spoken to Moses earlier. Either way, Joshua did not act on his own; he received his portion under God’s clear guidance.

Meaning

The phrase “according to the word of the LORD” points to God’s direct guidance. The LORD had promised Joshua success and rest in the land, and this gift fulfilled that promise. Joshua did not take the city for himself; the people gave it to him. He then built the city and lived in it. His action shows that he received the inheritance with responsibility, not merely as a reward. He made the place habitable and settled there, demonstrating that God’s gift required his faithful response. Even the leader of Israel received his inheritance last, after the tribes, showing humility and order. Joshua waited patiently, and God provided a secure home in His time.

Joshua’s inheritance mirrors what happened earlier with Caleb. In Joshua 14:6, Caleb received Hebron because he followed the LORD fully. Both leaders received their portions after the tribes, showing that God honors faithful service. Timnathserah later became Joshua’s burial place, as recorded in Joshua 24:30. This connection shows that his inheritance was permanent and that his legacy remained among his people. The city was within his own tribe, Ephraim, so Joshua chose to settle among his own people rather than seek a separate or greater portion. Application

God keeps His promises to those who serve Him faithfully. Joshua waited until the end of the land distribution, yet he received a secure home. He accepted what God gave and made good use of it. Christians are called to receive God’s provision with gratitude and to build their lives on it, using their resources for His glory. This passage encourages believers to trust in God’s provision and to follow His commands, knowing that He is intimately involved in the affairs of His people. Reflection

Joshua’s example invites each reader to consider how they receive what God gives. Do we seek our own interests first, or do we trust God’s timing and placement?
