Listen to this article

“According to the word of the LORD they gave him the city which he asked, even Timnath-serah in mount Ephraim: and he built the city, and dwelt therein.”

Historical Context:Joshua 19:50 takes place during the period of the conquest of Canaan by the Israelites under the leadership of Joshua. This verse comes at the end of a chapter that describes the allocation of land among the twelve tribes of Israel. Each tribe received its designated portion of the Promised Land.

The Word of the LORD:The verse begins by stating that the city of Timnathserah was given to Joshua according to the word of the LORD. This emphasises the divine guidance and fulfilment of God’s promise to Joshua. It highlights the importance of seeking God’s will and following His instructions.

Timnathserah in Mount Ephraim:Timnathserah was a city located in the hill country of Ephraim, which was allotted to the tribe of Ephraim as their inheritance. The city was given to Joshua as a personal possession, reflecting God’s recognition of Joshua’s faithful leadership and his role in leading the Israelites to possess the land.

Joshua’s Construction and Dwelling:The verse states that Joshua built the city of Timnathserah and dwelt there. This demonstrates Joshua’s initiative and leadership in establishing a settlement in the land that was given to him. It also signifies his permanent presence and influence in the area.

Lessons and Applications:

  • Trusting in God’s Word:The verse underscores the importance of trusting in God’s promises and following His guidance. Joshua received the city of Timnathserah because he acted according to the word of the LORD. Likewise, we should seek God’s guidance in our lives and trust in His promises.
  • Faithfulness and Leadership:Joshua’s construction and dwelling in Timnathserah highlight his faithfulness and leadership. As leaders, we should be diligent in fulfilling our responsibilities and leading by example. Joshua’s actions serve as an inspiration for us to be proactive and take ownership of the tasks entrusted to us.
  • Recognising God’s Provision:Joshua’s possession of Timnathserah reveals God’s provision and recognition of Joshua’s faithfulness. In our lives, we should acknowledge and give thanks for God’s blessings and provisions. It reminds us that every good and perfect gift comes from above.
  • Stewardship of Resources:Joshua’s building of the city demonstrates responsible stewardship. We should use the resources and blessings entrusted to us wisely and for the glory of God. It encourages us to be good stewards of the possessions and opportunities we have been given.
  • The Sovereignty of God:Throughout the conquest of Canaan, God’s sovereignty is evident. The allocation of land and the giving of cities were all part of God’s plan. It reminds us that God is in control, and His purposes will be accomplished.

This Bible study of Joshua 19:50 emphasises the importance of trusting in God’s guidance, being faithful in our responsibilities, recognising God’s provision, practising good stewardship, and acknowledging the sovereignty of God in our lives.
