Joshua 21:12

Listen to this article

“But the fields of the city, and the villages thereof, gave they to Caleb the son of Jephunneh for his possession.”

Context:To fully understand the significance of Joshua 21:12, it is important to consider the broader context. The book of Joshua recounts the Israelites’ conquest of the Promised Land under the leadership of Joshua. After the Israelites crossed the Jordan River and entered the land, it was divided among the twelve tribes of Israel. In Joshua 21, the chapter focuses on the allocation of cities to the Levites, who were chosen to serve as priests and had no inherited territory.

Inheritance of Caleb:Caleb, mentioned in Joshua 21:12, was one of the twelve spies sent by Moses to explore the land of Canaan (Numbers 13:6). He, along with Joshua, had shown faith and courage, affirming the goodness and faithfulness of God despite the discouraging report of the other spies. As a result, Caleb was promised a special inheritance in the Promised Land (Numbers 14:24).

Caleb’s Portion:According to Joshua 14, when it was time to divide the land among the tribes, Caleb reminded Joshua of the promise made to him by Moses. Caleb, now an aged man, requested the mountain region of Hebron, where the Anakim (a giant-like people) dwelt. Caleb expressed his confidence that with God’s help, he would drive out the Anakim and conquer the land (Joshua 14:10-12). Joshua granted Caleb’s request, and he received Hebron as his inheritance.

Additional Land:In Joshua 21:12, it is mentioned that Caleb also received the fields of the city and its villages. This indicates that Caleb received not only the city of Hebron but also the surrounding agricultural land. This additional land would have provided resources and sustenance for Caleb and his descendants.

Lessons to Learn:

  • Faith and Perseverance:Caleb’s story reminds us of the importance of faith and perseverance. Despite the challenges and giants in the land, Caleb remained steadfast in his trust in God’s promises. His example encourages us to trust in God’s faithfulness, even when circumstances seem daunting.
  • God’s Faithfulness:Caleb’s inheritance demonstrates God’s faithfulness to His promises. The fulfillment of the promise made to Caleb by Moses emphasizes that God keeps His word. This should inspire us to trust in God’s promises for our own lives, knowing that He is faithful and will fulfill what He has spoken.
  • Rewards of Faith:Caleb’s faith and loyalty to God resulted in a unique inheritance. God honored Caleb’s trust and gave him not only the land he desired but also additional blessings. This encourages us to remain faithful and obedient to God, knowing that He rewards those who diligently seek Him (Hebrews 11:6).

In summary, Joshua 21:12 highlights Caleb’s inheritance in the Promised Land, including the city of Hebron and its surrounding fields and villages. This passage teaches us about the importance of faith, God’s faithfulness, and the rewards that come from trusting in Him.
