Joshua 21:24

Aijalon with her suburbs, Gath–rimmon with her suburbs; four cities.

Joshua 21:24 (KJV)

Joshua 21 records how the Levites received cities within the Promised Land. Unlike other tribes, they had no single territory. Instead, God gave them specific cities with surrounding pasturelands, called suburbs, for their cattle and flocks. This verse lists two cities from the tribe of Dan: Aijalon and Gath-rimmon, each with its suburbs, making four cities. This arrangement was part of God’s faithful plan to care for those set apart for religious service.

The phrase “with her suburbs” shows that the Levites received not only houses but also land for their animals. This provision was practical and generous. The verse names each city carefully, showing that God’s care for His servants was detailed and orderly. He did not forget their needs. The specific naming of these cities underscores the thorough and reliable nature of God’s provision.

Aijalon is also named in Joshua 19:42 as part of Dan’s inheritance, and Gath-rimmon in Joshua 19:45. These connections confirm that the cities were real places within the tribal lands. The Levites lived among the people, ready to teach the law and serve in worship. Their distribution throughout the tribes meant that God’s Word was accessible to all Israel.

God’s provision for the Levites reminds us that He cares for those who serve Him. He supplies both a place to live and the means to sustain life. Believers today can trust that God sees their practical needs and will provide for them faithfully. This truth encourages us to rely on Him in our daily circumstances.

This verse encourages gratitude for God’s faithful care. It also calls us to support those who devote themselves to spiritual service, ensuring they are not neglected. As God provided for the Levites, we can participate in caring for His workers. Consider how you might help meet the needs of those who minister to you.
