Joshua 21:29
Jarmuth with her suburbs, En–gannim with her suburbs; four cities.
Joshua 21:29 (KJV)
Context
The book of Joshua records how Israel took possession of the Promised Land under Joshua after Moses died. This chapter lists the cities given to the Levites, who received no single territory of their own. Instead, they were scattered among the tribes, and each city included surrounding pastureland called suburbs for their livestock.
Meaning
Jarmuth and En-gannim were two of the four cities from the tribe of Issachar given to the Levites. The name Jarmuth means “elevation” or “height,” suggesting a place of prominence. En-gannim means “fountain of gardens” or “spring of gardens,” pointing to a place of fertility and water. These names show that God provided well for the Levites, giving them cities with good land and resources.
The phrase “four cities” includes the two named here plus Kishion and Daberath from the previous verse (Joshua 21:28). The suburbs were essential because they gave the Levites room for farming and grazing, so they could sustain their families while serving the Lord.
Biblical connections
In other lists, Jarmuth appears as Ramoth or Remeth, and En-gannim as Anem (1 Chronicles 6:73). These different names refer to the same places, reflecting how ancient records sometimes varied. This arrangement fulfilled God’s promise to provide for the tribe of Levi, who were set apart for spiritual service among all Israel.
Application
God cares for those who serve Him. Just as He gave the Levites homes and pastureland, He provides for His people’s needs today. Believers can trust that God sees their circumstances and supplies what is necessary for life and service.
Reflection
The careful listing of these cities reminds us that God is faithful to every promise. He did not forget the Levites, and He does not forget His children. This verse encourages us to rest in God’s provision and to serve Him with confidence, knowing that He has prepared a place for us.
