Listen to this article

“And out of the tribe of Asher, Mishal with her suburbs, Abdon with her suburbs,”

Context:Joshua 21 records the distribution of the cities and territories among the Levites, who were appointed by God to serve as priests and caretakers of the tabernacle. In this verse, the focus is on the cities given to the tribe of Asher.

The Tribe of Asher:The tribe of Asher was one of the twelve tribes of Israel. Asher was the eighth son of Jacob and one of the tribes that received an inheritance in the Promised Land. The land allotted to Asher was in the northern part of Canaan, along the Mediterranean coast.

Mishal and Abdon:Mishal and Abdon were two cities given to the Levites from the tribe of Asher. These cities served as Levitical cities, which were designated as dwelling places for the Levites throughout the land. The Levites were not given a specific portion of land like the other tribes but received cities dispersed throughout the territories of the other tribes.

Significance of Levitical Cities:The Levites played a crucial role in the religious life of Israel. They were responsible for the service of the tabernacle, offering sacrifices, teaching the law, and leading worship. The Levitical cities were strategically located to ensure that the Levites were accessible to the people for guidance, instruction, and the administration of justice.

Symbolic Meaning:While Mishal and Abdon are mentioned briefly in this verse, their inclusion highlights the fulfilment of God’s promise to provide for the Levites. It emphasises the importance of the Levites’ role in the spiritual life of the nation and reminds the Israelites of God’s faithfulness in establishing His priesthood.

Application:The inclusion of Mishal and Abdon in the distribution of the Levitical cities reminds us of the significance of spiritual leadership in our lives. It emphasises the need for God-appointed ministers, pastors, and leaders who can guide and shepherd His people. We should value and support those who are called to serve in these roles, recognising the importance of their work in nurturing and strengthening our faith communities.

In conclusion, Joshua 21:30 highlights the allocation of cities to the Levites from the tribe of Asher. It reminds us of the significance of the Levites’ role in Israel’s spiritual life and the importance of spiritual leadership in our own lives today.
