Joshua 22:5

Posted on 5 November 2024
Listen to this article

“But take diligent heed to do the commandment and the law, which Moses the servant of the LORD charged you, to love the LORD your God, and to walk in all his ways, and to keep his commandments, and to cleave unto him, and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul.”

This verse is part of a larger passage in the book of Joshua, which describes the events following the conquest of the Promised Land by the Israelites under the leadership of Joshua. At this point, Joshua is giving his farewell address to the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh, who were granted land on the eastern side of the Jordan River.

Diligent heed to God’s commandments:Joshua emphasizes the importance of carefully and faithfully obeying the commandments and laws given by Moses, who was the servant of the Lord. The Israelites were to pay close attention to the divine instructions, recognising their significance and adhering to them with care.

Love the Lord your God:The primary commandment that Joshua reminds the Israelites of is to love the Lord their God. This commandment encapsulates the essence of their relationship with God. Love for God was not merely an emotional sentiment but a deep-seated devotion, reverence, and commitment to Him.

Walk in all His ways:Joshua urges the Israelites to walk in all the ways of the Lord. This refers to living in accordance with God’s principles, following His guidance, and aligning their actions and choices with His will. It implies a lifestyle that reflects a close relationship with God, characterised by righteousness, obedience, and faithfulness.

Keep His commandments:Keeping God’s commandments means to observe and fulfil them. The Israelites were expected to not only know the commandments but also to actively live them out in their daily lives. This obedience demonstrated their loyalty to God and their desire to honour His authority.

Cleave unto Him:To “cleave unto” God signifies a wholehearted devotion and steadfast adherence to Him. It involves maintaining a strong, intimate connection with God, relying on Him, and seeking His presence continually. The Israelites were to cling to God and not turn away to worship other gods or follow worldly influences.

Serve Him with all your heart and soul:Joshua emphasises the importance of wholehearted service to God. Serving God is not a superficial duty but an expression of genuine love and dedication. It encompasses every aspect of their being—their thoughts, affections, motivations, and actions.

This verse highlights the timeless principles of obedience, love, and devotion to God. It calls believers to carefully heed God’s commandments, love Him deeply, walk in His ways, keep His commandments, cleave to Him, and serve Him with their whole being. These principles are not limited to the Israelites of old but remain relevant and applicable to all who seek to follow God faithfully today.
