Joshua 22:22

Posted on 5 November 2024
Listen to this article

“The LORD God of gods, the LORD God of gods, he knoweth, and Israel he shall know; if it be in rebellion, or if in transgression against the LORD, (save us not this day,)”

Context:Joshua 22 recounts the story of the Israelites preparing to return to their allotted lands after completing the conquest of Canaan. The eastern tribes of Reuben, Gad, and half the tribe of Manasseh had already received their inheritance on the eastern side of the Jordan River. Before they crossed the Jordan to join the other tribes, they built an altar on the banks of the Jordan. The other tribes misunderstood their intention and gathered to wage war against them. However, a delegation led by Phinehas, the high priest, was sent to seek an explanation.

Acknowledging God’s Omniscience:In Joshua 22:22, the Israelites affirm the knowledge of the Lord God of gods. This verse emphasizes the belief that God is all-knowing and nothing can be hidden from Him. The repetition of the phrase “The LORD God of gods” emphasizes the supremacy of God over all other gods worshipped by various nations.

As believers, we should recognise that God is not only the creator of the universe but also the one who knows all things. He is aware of our thoughts, motives, and actions. This truth should bring us comfort, knowing that we can trust Him completely and rely on His guidance and understanding.

A Call for Righteous Judgment:The latter part of Joshua 22:22 expresses a plea for the Lord’s judgment upon Israel if they were acting in rebellion or transgression against Him. The Israelites ask that God not save them on that day if they were guilty of any wrongdoing. This statement reflects their commitment to the Lord’s righteous standards and their desire to maintain a faithful relationship with Him.

This verse reminds us of the importance of living in obedience to God’s commands. We should be willing to subject ourselves to His righteous judgment, recognising that His ways are perfect and just. It also encourages us to seek accountability within the community of believers, allowing others to help us discern right from wrong and hold us accountable for our actions.

Application:

  • Trust in God’s Omniscience:Take comfort in the fact that God knows everything about you. Instead of trying to hide or pretend, come before Him with honesty and openness, knowing that He already knows your heart.
  • Pursue Righteousness:Seek to live a life that aligns with God’s commands. Regularly evaluate your actions, thoughts, and motives in light of His Word. Invite the Holy Spirit to convict you of any rebellion or transgression and make necessary changes to walk in obedience.
  • Embrace Accountability:Engage in healthy relationships within the Christian community where you can seek guidance and support. Be open to correction and encouragement, allowing others to help you grow in your faith and hold you accountable to God’s standards.

Remember, the ultimate goal of studying the Bible is not merely gaining knowledge but rather allowing God’s Word to transform our lives. May this study deepen your understanding of Joshua 22:22 and inspire you to live a life pleasing to God.
