Joshua 23:5

And the Lord your God, he shall expel them from before you, and drive them from out of your sight; and ye shall possess their land, as the Lord your God hath promised unto you.

Joshua 23:5 (KJV)

Joshua spoke these words near the end of his life, when he was very old. He had already divided the land among the tribes of Israel, but some nations still remained. In his farewell address, Joshua reminded the people that the Lord Himself would remove these nations from before them. This promise came after years of wandering in the wilderness and after many victories in Canaan. The people could look back and see that God had been faithful to His word.

The verse uses two strong actions: the Lord will “expel” and “drive” the nations out of the Israelites’ sight. This double expression shows certainty and divine power. God does not merely suggest or hope; He acts. The result is that Israel will possess the land, exactly as the Lord promised. The promise is not based on Israel’s merit but on God’s covenant faithfulness. Deuteronomy 9:5 explains that God drove out the nations because of their wickedness and to fulfill His oath to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. So the land is a gift of grace, yet it requires faithful possession.

This promise echoes what Moses told the people in Deuteronomy 31:5, that the Lord would deliver the nations before them. The same God who fought for Israel in the past would continue to fight for them. The immediate context in Joshua 23:6-8 calls Israel to be very courageous to keep the Law of Moses, not to mix with the remaining nations, and not to serve their gods. Thus, the promise of victory is tied to covenant obedience. God fights for His people, but they must hold fast to Him.

Believers today can trust that God will fulfill His promises, just as He did for Israel. The enemies we face may be sin, fear, or spiritual battles, but God is able to drive them out. However, we are also called to obey God’s commands and to hold fast to Him. Obedience is not the basis of the promise, but it is the path to experiencing it. As we walk in faith and obedience, God grants us victory according to His will.

God’s promises are sure because He is faithful. The same God who promised the land to Israel promises His love, grace, salvation, guidance, and provision to us. We are called to actively possess these promises by trusting and obeying Him. When we face obstacles, we can remember that the Lord our God is the one who fights for us. He will not fail, for He has promised.
