Joshua 23:14

Posted on 5 November 2024
Listen to this article

“And, behold, this day I am going the way of all the earth: and ye know in all your hearts and in all your souls, that not one thing hath failed of all the good things which the Lord your God spake concerning you; all are come to pass unto you, and not one thing hath failed thereof.”

Context:Joshua 23 is part of Joshua’s farewell address to the Israelites. After leading the people into the Promised Land and overseeing the conquest of the land, Joshua gathers the leaders and delivers his final exhortation, recounting God’s faithfulness to them and urging them to remain faithful to God.

Joshua’s departure:Joshua begins by acknowledging his impending death, saying, “this day I am going the way of all the earth.” This statement highlights the frailty and mortality of human life. Joshua’s recognition of his own mortality serves as a reminder to the Israelites that leaders come and go, but God’s promises endure forever.

God’s faithfulness:Joshua affirms the Israelites’ knowledge and experience of God’s faithfulness. He declares that not one thing has failed of all the good things which the Lord spoke concerning them. This emphasizes the fulfilment of God’s promises to the people of Israel throughout their journey from Egypt to the Promised Land. It reminds them that God is faithful and trustworthy, and His word can be relied upon.

God’s promises fulfilled:Joshua emphasises that all the good things promised by God have come to pass. Every word spoken by God concerning the Israelites has been fulfilled, and nothing has failed. This reiterates the fact that God’s faithfulness is not based on human effort but on His character and ability to fulfil His word. It encourages the Israelites to reflect on their journey and recognise the faithfulness of God.

Lessons for us:This verse provides valuable lessons for believers today. It reminds us of the importance of acknowledging our own mortality and the fleeting nature of earthly things. It encourages us to trust in the faithfulness of God, knowing that His promises will be fulfilled in His perfect timing. It also serves as a reminder to reflect on our own experiences of God’s faithfulness and recognise His hand at work in our lives.

In summary, Joshua 23:14 reaffirms the faithfulness of God and serves as a reminder of His promises fulfilled. It encourages us to trust in God’s faithfulness, even in the face of uncertainty, and to reflect on our own experiences of His goodness and provision.
