The book of Joshua records the events that followed Moses’ death and the Israelites’ entrance into the Promised Land. In verse 10 Joshua declares, “But I would not hearken unto Balaam; therefore he blessed you still: so I delivered you out of his hand.” The reference to Balaam recalls the episode in Numbers 22‑24 where the king of Moab hired Balaam to curse Israel. God, however, turned Balaam’s intended curses into blessings, demonstrating His power over hostile forces (also noted in Deuteronomy 23:5). The phrase “I would not hearken unto Balaam” reflects God’s sovereign authority—though nations may seek to harm Israel, He refuses to permit the curse and fulfills His promises.
Joshua emphasizes that the LORD delivered Israel out of the hand of all their enemies, highlighting divine deliverance and protection. This underscores God’s control over nations and His commitment to safeguard His people, even when adversaries plot against them.
