Listen to this article

But I would not hearken vnto Balaam, therefore he blessed you still: so I deliuered you out of his hand. Joshua 24:10 (KJV)

The book of Joshua records the events that followed Moses’ death and the Israelites’ entrance into the Promised Land. Joshua, who succeeded Moses as leader, guided the nation in the conquest of Canaan. In chapter 24 the people gathered at Shechem for a renewal of their covenant with God. Joshua recounts Israel’s history, emphasizing God’s faithfulness in delivering the nation from its enemies.

In verse 10 Joshua declares, “But I would not hearken unto Balaam; therefore he blessed you still: so I delivered you out of his hand.” The reference to Balaam recalls the episode in Numbers 22‑24 where the king of Moab hired Balaam to curse Israel. God, however, turned Balaam’s intended curses into blessings, demonstrating His power over hostile forces (also noted in Deuteronomy 23:5). The phrase “I would not hearken unto Balaam” reflects God’s sovereign authority—though nations may seek to harm Israel, He refuses to permit the curse and fulfills His promises.

Joshua emphasizes that the LORD delivered Israel out of the hand of all their enemies, highlighting divine deliverance and protection. This underscores God’s control over nations and His commitment to safeguard His people, even when adversaries plot against them.

Application for believers follows naturally. The passage reminds us of God’s faithfulness and ability to deliver from any challenge. Remembering how He has acted on our behalf fosters gratitude and trust, encouraging us to rely on His protection. As Israel recalled God’s past deliverance, believers are urged to remember His faithfulness to strengthen confidence in His future provision.

The renewal of the covenant at Shechem calls each generation to reaffirm commitment to obedience. By recalling God’s deliverance, Joshua challenges Israel—and us today—to renew our dedication to God, live faithfully under His guidance, and uphold His commands. May this study deepen your understanding of God’s steadfast love and inspire a renewed devotion to His covenant.
