Joshua 24:17

For the Lord our God, he it is that brought vs vp and our fathers out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage, & which did those great signes in our sight, and preserued vs in all the way wherein we went, and among all the people through whom we passed. Joshua 24:17 (KJV)

“The God of your fathers, he is the LORD: he hath brought us out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage, and hath performed those great signs, which thy sight hath seen before the eyes of our fathers.”

Context: The book of Joshua recounts the events after the death of Moses when Joshua led the Israelites into the Promised Land. Joshua 24 is a significant chapter where Joshua gathers all the tribes of Israel at Shechem and delivers his farewell address, reminding them of God’s faithfulness and their responsibility to serve Him.

God as Deliverer: In Joshua 24:17 the Israelites acknowledge that it was the LORD their God who delivered them from the land of Egypt. They recall the great signs and wonders God performed in their sight—such as the ten plagues, the parting of the Red Sea, and the provision of manna in the wilderness—affirming His power and care during their early history. This verse emphasizes God’s role as their Deliverer and their gratitude for His mighty acts.

God’s Preservation: The verse also highlights God’s continual guidance and protection throughout the journey. While it focuses on the deliverance and the great signs, it reflects the Israelites’ awareness that God preserved them in every way, protecting them against challenges and guiding them among all the peoples through whom they passed. Their recognition of His constant care demonstrates an understanding that their survival depended on divine providence.

Faith and Covenant: Joshua 24:17 reminds the people of Israel of their covenant relationship with God. They recognize that their deliverance and preservation were not merely coincidences or the result of their own strength, but a testament to God’s faithfulness. This acknowledgment encourages the Israelites to reaffirm their commitment to serve the LORD and to honor the covenant they made with Him.

Application: As believers today, Joshua 24:17 serves as a reminder of God’s deliverance, faithfulness, and guidance in our lives. We can reflect on how God has worked in our personal histories, bringing us out of bondage to sin and granting us salvation through Jesus Christ. The verse challenges us to be grateful for God’s interventions, to recognize His ongoing presence and care, and to honor our covenant with Him. We are called to live in obedience to His commands, recognizing that our lives belong to Him, and to continually reaffirm our dedication to follow and serve the Lord wholeheartedly.

In conclusion, Joshua 24:17 encapsulates the Israelites’ acknowledgment of God as their Deliverer and Preserver, highlighting His faithfulness throughout their journey. This verse encourages us to recognize God’s deliverance in our lives, to express gratitude for His provision, and to remain committed to our covenant with Him.
