Judges 1:11

Posted on 6 November 2024
Listen to this article

“And from thence he went against the inhabitants of Debir: and the name of Debir before was Kirjathsepher.”

This verse is a part of the narrative in the book of Judges:which describes the period of time after the death of Joshua when the Israelites had entered the Promised Land. The verse specifically focuses on the military campaign of a leader named Caleb, who was one of the spies sent by Moses to explore the land of Canaan (Numbers 13:6).

In Judges 1:11, it mentions that Caleb went against the inhabitants of Debir. Debir was a city located in the hill country of Judah. Prior to its conquest by Caleb, it was known as Kirjathsepher. The name “Kirjathsepher” means “city of the book” or “city of the scribe,” suggesting that it may have been a place of importance for record-keeping or learning.

Caleb’s campaign:against the inhabitants of Debir showcases his faith and determination in claiming the land that God had promised to the Israelites. Caleb was a man of great faith, and despite being one of the oldest among the Israelites at that time, he believed that God would enable him to drive out the inhabitants of the land. In fact, Caleb’s strong faith:allowed him to receive a special blessing from God, granting him the land of Hebron as his inheritance (Joshua 14:6-15).

This verse serves as a reminder of the Israelites’ efforts to possess the land that God had promised to them. It highlights the determination and obedience displayed by Caleb:in fulfilling God’s commandments. It also emphasizes the importance of faith in the face of challenges, as Caleb trusted in God’s power to deliver victory over the inhabitants of Debir.

Overall, Judges 1:11 serves as a historical account of Caleb’s military campaign and his successful conquest of Debir. It offers lessons about faith, obedience, and the fulfillment of God’s promises to His people.
