“Also Judah took Gaza with the coast thereof, and Askelon with the coast thereof, and Ekron with the coast thereof.”

Context: The book of Judges is set during the time after the Israelites’ conquest of the Promised Land under Joshua. It chronicles the period of the judges, when Israel experienced cycles of rebellion, oppression, repentance, and deliverance. This verse occurs within the context of the Israelite tribes’ efforts to possess their allotted territories.

The tribe of Judah: The verse highlights the tribe of Judah, one of the twelve tribes of Israel. Judah was a prominent tribe and played a significant role throughout Israel’s history. In the division of the land, Judah received a portion of the territory that included cities like Gaza, Askelon, and Ekron.

The conquest of Gaza, Askelon, and Ekron: The verse mentions three Philistine cities that Judah took possession of. These cities were inhabited by the Philistines, who were enemies of Israel. The conquest of these cities demonstrated Judah’s military strength and the fulfilment of God’s promise to give them the land.

The significance of the conquest: The conquest of these cities was crucial because it allowed the Israelites to establish a foothold in the region and exert their influence. However, it’s important to note that despite this initial success, the book of Judges later reveals that the Israelites struggled to fully drive out the Philistines from the land, leading to ongoing conflicts and challenges for future generations.
