Judges 2:2

Listen to this article

And yee shall make no league with the inhabitants of this land, you shal throw downe their altars: But ye haue not obeyed my voyce; Why haue ye done this? Judges 2:2 (KJV)

Historical Context: The book of Judges is part of the historical narrative in the Old Testament, covering the period after the conquest under Joshua, when Israel was governed by a series of judges who led the people spiritually and militarily through cycles of disobedience, oppression, repentance, and deliverance.

Covenant and Commandments: In Judges 2:2 the angel of the Lord (or God) speaks to the Israelites after they had settled in the Promised Land, emphasizing the importance of obeying God’s commands and not entering into covenants or alliances (league) with the inhabitants of the land, especially regarding their religious practices.

Prohibition of Idolatry: God instructs the Israelites to “throw down their altars,” a direct reference to the pagan altars and places of worship of the surrounding nations. He makes clear that Israel must worship Him alone and avoid idolatry or syncretism.

Disobedience and Consequences: The verse points out that the people “have not obeyed my voice,” highlighting their failure to follow the clear commandments. This disobedience is a recurring theme in Judges and led to severe consequences, including oppression by enemies.

Lessons for Today: Judges 2:2 reminds believers to remain faithful to God’s commands and avoid compromise with the world’s values and practices. It underscores the danger of idolatry and the importance of true worship and allegiance to God alone. As the Israelites suffered for their disobedience, we too can expect negative outcomes when we disregard God’s instructions.

Application: We should be cautious not to form alliances or partnerships with those who oppose God’s principles and values, whether in personal relationships or societal associations. Guarding against compromising our faith involves examining our lives, repenting of disobedient areas, and trusting that God is gracious and forgives those who genuinely seek Him and turn from sin.

Summary: Judges 2:2 serves as a cautionary message for believers to be vigilant in our walk with God, to obey His commands, avoid idolatry, and stay faithful, resisting the temptations of the world.
