Judges 2:7

Listen to this article

And the people serued the Lord all the dayes of Ioshua, and all the dayes of the Elders that outliued Ioshua, who had seene all the great workes of the Lord, that hee did for Israel. Judges 2:7 (KJV)

The book of Judges belongs to the historical books of the Old Testament and records the period of Israel’s history after the death of Joshua up to the establishment of the monarchy under King Saul. The Israelites had just entered the Promised Land under Joshua’s leadership, and this verse highlights the obedience and faithfulness of the people during that formative era.

Faithfulness during Joshua’s leadership is evident in the way the people of Israel served the Lord faithfully. Joshua is presented as a great military leader and a devoted servant of God who led the nation into numerous victories. Because the people witnessed the miraculous works of the Lord firsthand, their faith and commitment were strengthened.

The verse also mentions the role of the elders who outlived Joshua. These respected leaders had seen all the great works of the Lord in their lifetime, and their presence and influence helped to maintain the people’s devotion to God. Their firsthand experience of God’s mighty acts served as a living testimony that encouraged continued obedience.

For contemporary believers this passage serves as a reminder of the importance of remembering God’s faithfulness and passing that knowledge to future generations. The Israelites’ obedience resulted from personal experience of God’s power; likewise, we are called to reflect on God’s faithfulness in our own lives and to share those testimonies, especially with younger believers, to inspire and encourage them.

The transition to the book of Judges begins with the death of Joshua and the generation that had witnessed the Lord’s works. As the narrative continues, a new generation arises that does not know the Lord or His works, leading to widespread idolatry and apostasy. This contrast underscores that the initial faithfulness under Joshua and the elders did not endure beyond their generation, setting the stage for the recurring pattern of Israel’s faithlessness and God’s discipline that characterizes Judges.

In summary, Judges 2:7 (KJV) highlights the faithfulness of the Israelites to the Lord during Joshua’s time and the significant role played by the elders who had witnessed God’s great works. It calls us to remember and share God’s faithfulness across generations, lest the same cycle of neglect and disobedience repeat in our own communities.
